Glennis Jewell Boyd

Glennis Jewell (Uhrich) Boyd was born October 29, 1936, to Jacob and Anna Laura (DeLong) Uhrich, at their farmhouse, south of Oakley, in Logan County, KS. She was the youngest of three sisters. Glennis left her life here on earth on March 30, 2026.

She attended Champion country school for the first three grades. In those years, following 8th grade graduation from a country school, the child either quit school or boarded with a family in town. Her parents didn’t want either of these options and they believed in education so when her oldest sister Laura Ann graduated the family moved into Oakley. They moved directly across the street from their home church, the Oakley Christian Church. Glennis always said she remembered the Sunday school singing Happy Birthday to her as a two-year-old. She enjoyed living in town and going to school. As a child, her favorite pastimes were roller skating with her best friend Peggi, who lived across the street, and playing hopscotch with the neighborhood kids. A favorite was also slumber parties or as they called them “slumberless” parties, her parents were always willing to put up with noisy teenage girls. She accepted Jesus as her Savior and was baptized at the Christian Church where she was active in the youth programs and loved doing bible drills. Church camp was another favorite and in early high school it became a large part of her life. It was there that she met Lyle Boyd! After they met, he declared he had met the girl who he was going to marry.

Following graduation from OHS with the class of 1954, she attended Emporia State Teachers College where she was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority. Marriage would be a lifetime commitment for both Glennis and Lyle. Since their courtship had always been long distance, they decided to both attend Dallas Christian College for a year to really get to know each other and see if marriage was for them. Glennis went back to Emporia for a year and then the commitment to marriage was made. They were married June 21, 1957, and celebrated 68 years on June 21, 2025.

Following the wedding they moved to Denton, TX, where she completed her education at North Texas State College receiving a BS in education. Lyle was drafted into the Army, and she joined him for a year at Fort Dix, NJ. After Lyle was discharged, they came home to the farm that would be their home for the next 50 years. Glennis was a typical farm wife in that age. She helped in many areas of farm life, running errands, changing irrigation, driving the grain cart, helping work cattle, (the first time she helped deliver a calf, she was pregnant with Gina), but her most important jobs were being a wife to Lyle, a mom to Gina, Link and Grant and keeping the home functioning. She was also involved with the church, teaching Sunday School, ladies Bible studies, serving as deaconess, mission committee and various community activities. She loved being a Room Mother, helping with the kids’ parties, 4-H and activities. Vacations with the family were important and enjoyed by all.

The empty nest brought a new stage of life as the children left to further their education and marry. She was pleased to know that the love of education from her parents was carried on as each of her children graduated from college.

Then came retirement and leaving the farm and moving into Oakley. Lyle and Glennis loved travel and used many different types, car, RV, bus tours, cruises, traveling to all 50 states, Canada, and many foreign countries. Later, they spent the winter months in Arizona, enjoying the warm weather and the many activities at the resort. She enjoyed being active in the resort church, singing in the choir and the musicals, learning to make greeting cards and working to help others with the Care Group. Here she started her popular Pie Party… she would invite friends and neighbors to come and share a slice of pie, usually entertaining about 50 guests. Life there led to many lasting friendships across the miles in the US and Canada.

Glennis enjoyed having guests and entertaining. Visiting family, friends, missionaries, and college music groups were always welcome in their home. As grandkids came along, she invited the grands to come for Grandma Camps, which included cooking, crafts, devotional time and Grandpa taking them fishing. Family reunions were a joy whether at the farm or in later years at the church Cave.

Living for Jesus was of most importance to her and she often quoted the song and said, “when life is over and it’s all been done, what will matter is did you know my Son!”

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters and their spouses, Laura Ann (Ted) Holmberg and Delma (Merle) Dible.

Surviving are her spouse Lyle; children, Gina (Mark) Parr, Link (Joy) Boyd and Grant (Rebecca) Boyd; grandchildren and great grandchildren: Mitchel, Danielle, Piper and Shepherd Parr; Andrew, Whitney, Dawson and Kipton Parr; Tanner, Adria, Paxton, Pierce and Palmer Parr; Annalise Parr; Logan and Krista Boyd; Carly, Cameron and Oakley Langston; Braydon Boyd; Jathen Boyd; and Eden Boyd; along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

A memorial service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 6, 2026, at the Oakley Christian Church.
