Gloria J. Black
Gloria was born in
Kingsland, Georgia on March 6, 1943, to Edward and Eloise Baker.
Gloria accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Abyssinia Missionary Baptist Church where she was a member until her death. During her membership, she served on the Minister's Wives' and Deaconess Board, Pastoral Care Committee, Usher Board, Choir #3, Director of Choir #4, Mass Choir, Sunday School teacher, and an active member of District #19.
Gloria received her education in the Duval County School System, graduating in 1960 from Northwestern High-School where she was Head Majorette. After 21 years of service and furthering her education by obtaining underwriting and automobile rate analysis certifications she retired from the insurance industry. Following retirement, Gloria worked for Abyssinia Christian Academy until its closure.
Gloria was the epitome' of a kind-hearted Godly woman. One who was full of grace and selflessness with an unwavering love for her family. An immaculate dresser with a flair for fashion; turning heads in whatever room she entered. She was a caretaker to her grand and great-grandchildren until her health declined. She enjoyed traveling with her family and never missed an opportunity to play games and dance to her favorite music.
Her motherly love extended beyond her family as many called her "Momma Black". Her Godly wisdom and support guided many young women through the ups and downs of life.
Gloria departed this earthly life on March 21, 2024. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Eloise Baker; sister Shirley Davis; nephew, Van Baker Jr.; niece, Ayanna Levy; and great-nephew, Deshawn Lockett.
Gloria leaves to cherish her memories: a dedicated and loving husband of over 66 years, Reverend Richard Black; daughters, Velvet Holman, Mignon Hammond (James), Nicole Wright (Derrick), and Sarah Ben David (Yehudah); granddaughters, Takoya (Winston), Destinie (Devante), and Chayce; grandsons; Yochanan (Anna), Yoshiyahu (Gaelle), Noach, Bryce; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Yvonne Baker; brothers, Earl Baker (Juanita), Bishop Van Baker Sr. (Marchell); and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends including Moms' Private Duty Nurse, Bessie Johnson.
