Mrs Gloria Valencia Cothran

Gloria Valencia was born on January 6, 1925, in Los Angeles, CA. A graduate of Polytechnic High School, in 1943 she met and married Fletcher P. Cothran, a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. In 1956, the cothran family, now with sons Paul and Bob, moved to La Mirada, CA where they lived until 1977. During that time, Gloria was active in her church, serving in various groups such as the Altar Society and the Women's Council. In 1977, Gloria And Fletcher Cothran moved to Carlsbad, CA. In 1978, Gloria returned to school, earning a Law Degree from Western State University in 1983. She subsequently served as Administrative Assistant to John McDonald, Firth District Supervisor of San Diego County. She also served as a County Commissioner until 1999. In 1990, Gloria was instrumental in founding a local advocacy group, the North County Latinas Association. Additionally, she served in the Board of Governors and the Hispanic Advisory Council for California State University at San Marcos. Gloria Valencia Cothran died on September 5, 2007. She was 82. She is survived by her two sons, Paul and Bob. Services for Gloria were held at Pilgrim United Church of Christ, 2020 Chestnut Ave, Carlsbad, CA on Monday, September 10, 2007. Inurnment will be private, for the family only.
