Gloria E. Mathieu

Gloria E. Mathieu, age 91 of Tapiola, MI, passed away Friday, April 7, 2023, at Omega House, Houghton, MI, with her loving family by her side. She was born in Hancock, MI, on November 28, 1931, the daughter of the late John and Agnes (Keranen) Eilola. Gloria attended elementary school in Hancock, MI, and graduated from John A. Doelle Agricultural School, Tapiola, as class valedictorian in 1949. She married Harold Mathieu in 1956. He preceded her in death in 1999. Gloria was a member of Mission United Lutheran Church, Pelkie, and the Doelle Senior Citizen Center, Tapiola.
Gloria is survived by her loving children Mark Mathieu of Raleigh, North Carolina, Susan (Tom) Chamberlain of Williamsburg, Virginia, and Laura Mathieu (Jon Onkalo) of Tapiola, grandchildren Michael, Desiree, and Sofie, great grandchildren Bronson and Avery, and sister Nancy Myllyla of Arnheim. Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brothers John and Donald Eilola, and sisters Helen Leinonen and Mae Eilola.
Funeral services for Gloria will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 14, 2023, at Mission United Lutheran Church with Pastor Kelly Ylitalo officiating. The family will greet friends at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Immediately following the service, the family invites friends to join them for fellowship and a luncheon in the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials in Gloria's honor to be directed to Mission United Lutheran Church or the Askel Cemetery. Envelopes will be available at the church.
Spring interment will take place in the Askel Cemetery.
The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse, has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
