Gloria Pfeil Smith passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at the age of 98. She was born in San Antonio, Texas on October 6, 1927, to Theodore D. Pfeil and Thelma Matilda (Crowder) Pfeil.

She married Guy Holland Smith on January 12, 1948, and moved to the Smith Ranch where she lived for the next 78 years. She was a stay-at-home mother while she raised their six children and then when her oldest was in high school, she went to work for the Highway Department where she worked until she left to take care of Guy during his cancer treatments. Following Guy's death, she went to work for John Self, then County Treasurer of Atascosa County. When John took early retirement, Gloria was appointed to fulfill his unfinished term. She was subsequently elected and reelected. She served as the County Treasurer of Atascosa County for 12 years until she retired. Gloria filled her retirement years managing the Smith Ranch and traveling.

Gloria was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Holland Smith; her parents; her parents-in-law, Guy Hooker Smith and Hazel (Holland) Smith; a daughter, Kathleen Smith Krueger, a granddaughter Heather Cottle, and two grandsons, Brad Smith and Jason Holland Krueger.

Gloria leaves behind her children, Rhonda Smith Hawkins, Guy Randel (Randy) Smith, Shirle Smith Donaghe, Jay Holland Smith and Susanne (Susy) Smith Huizar, 17 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

A celebration of Gloria's life will be held a a later date.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to any of the first responders in your area, in Mrs. Gloria's name. We have a couple that we have attached through our "Memorial Donation" button below - Jourdanton Volunteer Fire Department and the Blackhill Volunteer Fire Department. Thank you.
