Gordon Delano “Shorty” Mead passed away peacefully surrounded by family at his home on Monday, November 10, 2025. He was born on February 21, 1937, to the late Martha Etta Lovett Mead and John Gordon Mead.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Virginia; his daughter, Millie Johnson (Rudy); two grandsons, Christopher and Taylor; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his precious granddaughter, Claire Johnson, and his nine siblings: sisters Harriett O’Pry, Mary Forehand, Christine Tanner, Minnie Jenkins, Martha Ann Daniel, and Jackie Robbins; and brothers Robert, Thomas, and Lovett Mead.
Shorty was a hardworking man who spent many years farming before working in home construction. He later retired as a maintenance supervisor with the Waynesboro Housing Authority.
He was a talented woodworker who enjoyed building and restoring furniture, as well as woodcarving. He was an avid gardener and grew all kinds of vegetables and loved sharing them with family and friends. Shorty loved being outside, especially when he was fishing, dove hunting, or just enjoying nature. He also loved a good challenge and could fix just about anything. Some of his favorite afternoons were spent in his shop tinkering, building, and getting things to work with his dog, Scooter (aka Buster), by his side.
He will be remembered for his craftsmanship, generous spirit, and his love for family.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, November 14 at 3:00 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Mike Flowers officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be his nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Vision Fund of Rosemont Baptist Church, 522 Hwy 25 North, Waynesboro, GA 30830.
