Gordon L. Smedley
Ashland - Gordon L. Smedley, 100, of Ashland, IL, died August 24, 2025, at Stonebridge Memory Care in Jacksonville.
Gordon, a long-time resident of Ashland, was born November 11, 1924, to parents, Gordon Leroy and May Daniel Smedley. He married Winifred Wankel Smedley on April 19, 1947.
He is survived by his sister, Wanda (deceased husband, Gerald) Huff of Ashland; daughters, Lyn (Roger) Dietz of Jacksonville and Sandra (Greg) Davis. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Beth (Jeff) Hopkins of Jacksonville, Becky (Michael) Mahoney, of Alexander, Brett (Kerry) Leach of Modesto, and Andy Davis of Springfield; great-grandchildren, Trey (Haley) Hopkins of Ashland, Delanie Hopkins of Springfield, Quinlan (Chris) DeGroot of Jacksonville, Wyatt Mahoney of Alexander, Ainsley Mahoney of Alexander, and Allie Leach of Modesto; and one great-great grandson, Beau Hopkins of Ashland; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Winnie; his sister, Florence (James) Gephart; and his great-grandson, Ethan Mahoney.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Ashland, with burial at Ashland Cemetery. The family will meet friends 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service. Memorials are suggested to the Ashland Fire Department or to the Ashland Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). I will have a lot of good memories of Gordon. We stood side by side at many military funerals. He always had a good story for me, many of them about duck hunting. He will be missed but not forgotten.
