Obituary published on Legacy.com by Uht Funeral Home and Cremation Services on Nov. 15, 2024.
It is with great sadness that after a long and fulfilling life, we announce the passing of Grace Viola Browe, November 10th at the age of 95. Surrounded by loved ones, she left her Earthly body peacefully and is now reunited in Heaven with her husband and childhood love Edward after 38 years. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, warmth, love, unconditional sacrifice and dedication to her family, perseverance, and steadfast faith in her God.
Grace was born on October 23, 1929, in Wayne, MI to Emma and Albert Keighley. Soon after her family moved to Dearborn Heights, MI, living there until she and Ed married. Eventually, Grace found her way back to Wayne, where the couple bought a house on Richard Street. There they raised their daughters, and as all good grandparents do, enjoyed the company of their grandchildren while both continued working full time, traveling, and being active in the community.
Remaining there after Ed's sudden passing in 1986, she continued caring for the next generation of great-grandchildren and over the years provided a welcoming place to stay for many family members. In 2019 Grace moved in with her granddaughter Christine and her
family in Saline, MI, ultimately having lived in that same house in Wayne for 72 years. To help make ends meet in the family budget, in 1960 Grace decided to take a job at the Wayne Post Office for "just a few hours a week". She quickly becoming an integral
employee of the "Dirty Bird" (her reference to the dark-colored eagle in the USPS logo). She spent her 32-year career working in various positions from Mail Sorter to Window Clerk, while also representing her fellow members of the American Postal Workers Union as a shop Steward. She finally hung up her Post Office smock in 1993, having never spent one week just working "a few hours" for Uncle Sam.
Released from the "Dirty Bird's" claws, Grace fully embraced and took advantage of her new occupation as "Retiree". Free to do more of the things that she really enjoyed, Grace spent her days traveling, attending church activities, playing cards, crocheting, dabbling in
photography (taking pictures of, among other things, rest areas and Post Offices), watching nature, cooking, and visiting with friends and family. With her busy social calendar, she was often overheard saying "I don't know how I ever had time to work".
By far her most favored activity was spending time at "The Cabin", her vacation home on East Twin Lake in Lewiston, MI. She especially enjoyed sitting near the beach (but not in the water!), having campfires, and watching the sunset over the lake.
Grace was preceded in death by her husband Edward, daughter and son-in-law Lynn and Darrell Betz, sister Evelyn Keighley, and brother-in-law Jack Boswell. She is survived by her sister Elizabeth Boswell, daughters Sharon (Virgil) Ketz, and Margaret (Bruce) Murray, along with her 5 grandchildren Steve (Nicole) Murray, Renee (Dan) Pawlicki, Cheryl (Bill) Martin, Christine (Brian) Easley, and Laurie (Geoff) Greenway. Grace was blessed with an additional 7 great-grand, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
A Visitation has been scheduled on Sunday November 17th from 1pm-8pm, and Grace's Funeral celebration will be held on Monday November 18th at 11am, both located at Uht Funeral Home in
Westland, MI. Interment will take place following the service at Cadillac
Memorial Gardens West, with a luncheon following.
