Grace Scanlon Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Britton-Wallace Funeral Home - Auburn on Feb. 1, 2026.
Grace M. "Gracie" (Raymond) Scanlon, an adored mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2026, at the age of 90 at The Life Care Center of Auburn.

Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, Grace was the cherished daughter of Robert and Grace (Pollinger) Raymond. She was one of six children in a close-knit family and was raised with the values of love, integrity, and community.

Grace graduated from Saint Peter's High School in Worcester and soon started a career with New England Telephone. It was at this time; she met a handsome young man named James F. Scanlon. The two fell in love and were married at North American Martyrs Church in Auburn. Together, they built a beautiful life in Auburn, where they spent 65 wonderful years raising their family with unwavering faith and traditional values.

A devoted member of her community, Grace was a faithful communicant of North American Martyrs Parish in Auburn. Her dedication to her faith and Irish heritage was evident in her lifetime membership and active participation in the Ladies Ancient Order of the Hibernians (LAOH-Division 36) in Worcester, where she held numerous positions throughout the years. Additionally, she enriched the lives of many through her involvement with the Auburn Women's Club and enjoyed volunteering her service at the voting pole locations in Auburn for many years.

Grace had a zest for life and a love for simple pleasures, such as being surrounded by her beautiful large family. She was an avid sports fan and could often be found cheering them on. She enjoyed playing Bingo, and her fondness for day trips created lasting memories with her family at Hampton Beach when her children were younger and later in life with her grandchildren, family and friends at the beaches of Ocean Park, Maine.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James F. Scanlon; her brothers, Paul and Robert; and her sisters, Ruth and Rosemary.

Grace leaves behind a legacy of love and joy, survived by her devoted children, Colleen Bregman and her husband Howard, James Scanlon and his wife Lisa, Daniel Scanlon and his wife Cheryl, Patrick Scanlon and his wife Melissa, Brian Scanlon and his wife Kristelle, and Sheila Gowaski and her husband Christopher. Her fifteen grandchildren, James, Patrick, Kevin, Nicholas, Jenna, Erin, Katelyn, Joseph, Michael, Liam, Grace, Shawn, Matthew, Aidan, and Jack; and nine great-grandchildren, Nora, James, Claire, Gabriel, Josie, Declan, Maeve, Callah, and Renée, will continue to celebrate her life and honor her memory. Grace also leaves behind a loving brother Thomas Raymond and many cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The Scanlon family extends their heartfelt gratitude to their dear friend, Kellie, who lovingly cared for Grace over the past two years, serving as both caregiver and angel.

They are also eternally grateful to the staff of Life Care of Auburn and New England Hospice for their guidance and support, which made an incredibly difficult time more peaceful."

Memorial donations may be made to Auburn Youth and Family Services, (https://www.ayfs.org/) or to Worcester Hibernian Cultural Foundation, (https://worcesterculture.org/organizations/worcester-hibernian-cultural-centre/).

I´m very sorry to hear of Mrs. Scanlons passing, I spent many of my years growing up playing with her sons Pat and Dan in their home on Davis Road in Auburn. I´ve been away for many years now, but I will always remember her with fond memories. God bless her and keep her forever, and God bless her family as well!
