Obituary of Grace F. Thompson
Grace Noel Thompson, of Piper Shores, Scarborough, Maine, formerly of Winslow, ME, Needham, MA, and Newton, MA, passed away on August 1, 2023. Grace was born on Christmas Day, December 25, 1921 in Springfield, MA to the late George T. and Zilda L. (Knight) Fisher.
She is survived by daughter Holly Stucki (David) of Oakland, ME. Grace is also survived by grandchildren Heidi Pike (William) of Standish, ME and Hannah Page (Austin) of Smithfield, VA.
Grace is predeceased by her husband Edward F. Thompson. Her brother Reverend Doctor George F. Fisher predeceased her in 2015 at the age of 100. She was also predeceased by brothers Clifford Fisher and Rodney Fisher. Grace is survived by sister Daphne E. Shaub of Ewing, NY, and many nieces and nephews.
Grace graduated from Newton North High School in 1941, and attended Boston University. After college she joined the Raytheon Corporation working on military projects welding filaments for test tubes. She also worked at Stowe Woodward in Newton Upper Falls, MA where they made bowling balls.
Grace desired to help her country win the war and joined the Army. Grace was an Army Veteran of World War II, in the Women's Auxiliary Corp. She graduated from the Administration School of the University of Arkansas and Administration Police School at Ft. Devens, MA. She also served as a Postal Clerk at Governors Island, NY. She was the recipient of the American Service Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Women's Army Corp Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. She also served in Ft. Oglethorpe, GA.
Grace loved music and for many years was the church organist for Second Baptist Church in Newton Upper Falls, MA. She loved to sing and harmonize, especially church hymns. She loved to play hymns and music from the 20's, 30's and 40's on the piano.
For the last 10 years Grace was a resident at Piper Shores in Scarborough, ME. She was active there in singing groups, swimming, and played the ukulele. She loved to enrich herself by attending educational seminars held on campus. Grace loved animals especially her pet canary "Birdie, She loved visits from her granddaughter's dog "Daisy". During Covid she would enjoy watching surfers at Higgins Beach.
Grace loved to be with family. She enjoyed traveling to see her relatives even into her 90's. In her younger days she enjoyed speed skating and would walk for miles to skate at Bullough's Pond in Newton, MA. She also would spend hours of the day reading.
A private family service is planned at the VA cemetery at a future date.
