Greg K. Cheney was born on May 1, 1954, in Garden City, Kansas, to Howard Edwin and Lauretta P. Cheney. He passed away peacefully on February 1, 2026, at his home of the past four years, Via Christi Village, where he was surrounded by a dedicated care team who provided him with compassionate and exceptional care.
Greg attended elementary school in Friend and Shallow Water, Kansas, and went on to Scott Community High School from 1968 to 1972. Following graduation, he attended Colby Community College from 1972 to 1974, where he served as Student Council President during the 1973–1974 school year and earned his Associate’s Degree in 1974. He continued his education at Kansas State University majoring in horticulture.
On August 12, 1974, Greg married Phyllis M. Withington at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Atwood, Kansas. Together they made their home in southern Scott County in 1975. From this union were born three children: Braden J. Cheney, Shawn M. Cheney, and Victoria M. Cheney.
Greg farmed alongside his family for 30 years before relocating to eastern Kansas. During that time, he worked in several roles, including with Community Living Opportunities in Lawrence, Kansas, and later alongside his son Braden in building waterscapes.
Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Howard Edwin and Lauretta P. Cheney, and his brother, Glen Cheney.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Phyllis M. Cheney of Chapman, Kansas; his son Braden J. Cheney and wife Amy of Topeka, Kansas; his son Shawn M. Cheney and wife Jackie of Paola, Kansas; and his daughter Victoria M. Woods and husband Jeremiah of Chapman, Kansas. He was a proud grandfather to Zen Cheney, Sloane Cheney, Cole Cheney, Grace Cheney, Roper Woods, and Tripp Woods; step-grandfather to Katelyn Deever and her husband Michael; great-grandfather to Myra Cheney; and step-great-grandfather to Draven Deever.
He is also survived by his brother Gary Cheney and wife Julia of Scott City, Kansas; sisters Judy Thomas and Karla Sharpe, both of Scott City, Kansas; brothers-in-law Harlan Withington and wife Vonnie of Rogers, Arkansas, Kenneth Withington and wife Laura of Colby, Kansas, and Dale Withington and wife Debbie of Oberlin, Kansas; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Greg deeply loved spending time with his grandchildren and cherished moments with family and friends. He enjoyed gardening, music, collecting gems and rocks, and had a strong appreciation for art. He was an avid reader with a deep love for books—especially the Bible—and often said, “The day they stop printing books is the day history can be erased.”
Greg openly shared Jesus and the hope of salvation and eternal life, holding firmly to his faith and the promise of eternity. In 2006, Greg was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and in 2013 he underwent deep brain stimulation surgery. Throughout his journey, he remained hopeful and purposeful, always desiring that others with Parkinson’s could learn from his experience, gain understanding, and find encouragement through what he shared.
Cremation has taken place and there will be a private family service at a later date. The Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home and Crematory assisted the family with arrangements.
