Greg Page Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 27, 2009.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Greg Page, a former heavyweight boxing champion who suffered a severe brain injury in a 2001 fight, has died at his Louisville home. He was 50.

His wife, Patricia Page, said she found the one-time World Boxing Association champion in his bed Monday morning. Patricia Page said he died of complications related to injuries he suffered in the fight.

Page told The Associated Press her husband "is in a better place now."

The March 9, 2001, fight left Page in a coma for nearly a week. He then had a stroke during post-fight surgery. He was paralyzed on his left side and received intensive physical therapy.

Page won a $1.2 million settlement in 2007 with Kentucky boxing officials over the lack of medical personnel at the fight. Boxing officials also agreed to establish a medical review panel for the Kentucky Boxing and Wrestling Authority to check the health conditions of people involved in the sport who may be at risk for injury.

Page started fighting while growing up in Louisville and was sparring with Muhammad Ali by the time he was 15. He became the National Golden Gloves heavyweight champion in 1978 at age 20.

He turned to professional boxing and lost his first shot at the WBA heavyweight championship in 1984 to Tim Witherspoon. In December of that year, Page knocked out Gerrie Coetzee in the eighth round of their bout in South Africa to claim the title, but lost on points to Tony Tubbs five months later.

Page continued boxing through 1993, then took two years off after being knocked out by Bruce Seldon. He started again in 1996.

Page was 42 and had a 58-16-1 career record going into the $1,500 fight against Dale Crowe at Peels Palace in Erlanger, Ky., near Cincinnati. Crowe was 24 and an up-and-coming boxer. Page went down after 10 rounds and didn't get up.

Patricia Page said Monday that funeral arrangements were pending.

Saw former boxer Earnie Shavers the other day in Las Vegas memorbilia store and it got me thinking of Greg. He was my friend. I met him in 1979 when he came over to my dormitory in college in Louisville. He was dating a college friend of mine. He was a great guy. Funny, enjoyable to be around, and someone I will never forget. When someone asks me if I know any celebrities...I always tell them how special he was to me. May God Bless You Patricia and his family always!!!!

Greg was a TRUE Champion. I used to be one of his sparring partners at two gyms. The way he boxed was so much like Ali that it was amazing. I will never forget you, Greg! You're truly an inspiration for up and coming fighters. May your family find piece in your contributions to all of those fighters that looked up to you, as I did!

Along time ago, my Daddy was a teacher at Dietrich Vocational Center. I remember him coming home saying that one of his students was a boy named Greg Page. He would be trying to teach, and Greg would start punching the air and bouncing around. My daddy told s that Greg used to tell him and all the students in that class that he would be great someday. And greg was right!!! He will be missed. You are in our prayers.

I HAD TO GO AWAY

I had to go away.
I'm sorry you couldn't come with me.
But on earth is where you shall stay.
Please do not be sad.
Instead laugh and be glad.
I'm in a beautiful place, such a beautiful place.
I know you wont see me for a while.
But you will hear from me.
I will be the wind that will chill you on a hot summer day.
I will be the sun that will warm you when it's cold.
Listen to the birds sing, I will be saying, "I love you" in their song.
I know you can't touch me.
But you will feel me.
Because I will be inside of you giving you life on the days you feel like you can't go on anymore.
Please I beg of you, go on, live your life as I lived mine.
Always remember we will be together again.
I will be patiently waiting for you on that day.
When you will join me in this beautiful place.
Until then may God bless you with his almighty grace.

I have been a boxing fan since I was 7 years old. I am now 55. I remember many great boxers over 48 years, but Greg Paige was always a very warm hearted, and very humble person. He ranks right up there with Joe Luis, Rocky marciano, and George Foreman. Not only were they gifted boxers, They were true gentelman , and wonderful human beings, May God bless Greg, and his family. Earth lost a wonderful soul, Heaven has a new Saint. God bless All of us.

Just wanted to let you know, Patricia, that you and Greg have been in my thoughts and prayers often, since back when I worked with you at Frazier Rehab. Greg was such a special person, and I am glad I had the chance to get to know him when I was his nurse. He always made me laugh with the funny things he said and how stubborn & hard-headed he could be at times. Greg suffered his injury with grace and dignity and never quit fighting until the end. He was and always will be a true champion in my book. May God bless you and your family and may He keep you in his care at this difficult time.

Our family had the privilege of living across the street from the Page family in Heather Hills during the early years of Greg's career. Greg always had a large following and his name was in the headlines often. All the fame yet he remained a polite, gentile soul who respected his Mom and Dad above all. I was his Dad's chaplain during his final days. I was so impressed at the maturity Greg showed when his dad passed. Our prayers are for the family during this time of loss and adjustment.
