Gregg William Doty

Gregg William Doty, a devoted family man, accomplished sailor, and proud resident of Birmingham, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loved ones on May 22, 2025. He was 79 years old.
Born on November 24, 1945, in Pontiac, Michigan, Gregg was the beloved son of Ray William and Evelyn Marie (neé Douck) Doty. He grew up in Lake Orion, where he graduated from high school then went on to receive a Bachelor's degree from Western Michigan University which laid the foundation for a lifelong career in engineering. Gregg went on to serve Oakland County as a skilled facilities engineer, retiring in 2002 after decades of dedicated work.
A sailor at heart, Gregg's love for the water began early and never waned. Gregg was a proud member of the Singlehanded Society, the Doublehanded Society and the North Star Sail Club. He exemplified the honor and independence of single-handed sailing. His sailing accomplishments included many races and cruises on the Great Lakes, crossing the Atlantic Ocean into Bermuda and the Azores, plus mastering celestial navigation.
In retirement, he embraced life at sea more fully than ever, charting courses to as far away as Venezuela and Trinidad. He skillfully navigating the crystal waters of the Caribbean Islands and the Bahamas. Known among fellow sailors as someone always willing to lend a hand, Gregg was both skilled and generous on the water.
Outside of sailing, Gregg enjoyed duck hunting trips and lively games of cards with his closest friends, always bringing humor and warmth to any gathering. But above all, his most cherished roles were those of husband, father, and grandfather.
Gregg married the love of his life, Luba, on August 24, 2007, at the First United Methodist Church in Birmingham. Together, they shared a deep bond and a passion for exploring the world. Their travels took them to far-reaching destinations including China, Australia, New Zealand, Peru, Argentina, South Africa, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Columbia, Panama and the Caribbean.
In addition to his love of adventure, Gregg was a supportive and devoted father and a fun-loving grandfather. He took great pride in his children and delighted in spending time with his grandchildren, always ready with a joke to make them laugh. His humor and steady presence will be deeply missed.
Gregg is survived by his beloved wife, Luba Doty; his children, Jessica (John) Downey and Spencer (Courtney) Doty; and his adored grandchildren, Penelope Doty, Lucy Doty, Lola Downey, Olive Downey, George Doty, and Hattie Downey. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
