On the morning of November 16th surrounded by loved ones, Greg closed his eyes in his hospital room and opened them in the presence of his Savior Jesus Christ.
Gregory Joseph Armstrong was born in Evanston, Illinois on December 20, 1945, to John and Agnes Armstrong. As the youngest of 5 boys (one little sister would follow 8 years later) Greg was fun-loving, creative, and talented. He sang in musicals and for competitions through high school and also competed in gymnastics. One high school accomplishment about which he spoke often was his starring role as Billy Bigalow in Carousel. Greg had a song for everything and everyone. We will happily keep the music going, Dad! Thanks for sharing your love of song with all of us!
As a young college student Greg went to a movie on a Saturday night. It was 2001 Space Odessey. As he tells it, he could not make it through the long, opening credits so he left and went to a party instead. There he met Kristin Jane McNeal. Because Greg was an aerobatic pilot, their romance started off on a high note. Their first date was spent dipping and rolling through the wild blue yonder, as Greg showed off his flying skills to the pretty, young brunette from Iowa. They were married on August 23, 1969.
As the years passed, they welcomed their beloved children, Margaret Agnes and Fraser McNeal. Many happy and memorable years were spent on the 5-acre homestead on Knott Road in Oshkosh, WI. Greg loved to see his family happy and enjoying life. If that meant the kids brought a pet turkey home from the county fair, so be it. If it was a rainy Saturday and they had the idea of having a rope swing in the great room, Dad was on board. And when Kris said she'd "like to have sheep someday" on a Wednesday, they had 4 sheep by Saturday.
When Fraser and Christina welcomed their first baby, Cadence, Greg was more than ready to embrace this new calling. He and Kris packed up and moved to Missouri to be full-time Papa and Yaya to Cadence, Cole, Kenzie, and Clay. As one of the shirts he was gifted stated so accurately: "If Papa can't fix it, nobody can!" Papa was a living hero to his kids and grandkids alike. He built stepstools, instruments, kayaks, futons, and go-carts. He fixed toys, untangled necklaces, and delt with all the mechanical issues his family could throw at him. Greg was exceedingly generous not only with his time, but also with his finances. In addition to giving to missions and church, Greg's favorite way to spend money on his loved ones was through eating out at their favorite places (particularly after church on Sundays) and funding wonderful, memorable vacations together.
Greg was a talented, gifted, hilarious, loving man with many hobbies, skills, and interests, but what he was most proud of and thankful for was that his entire family was happy, healthy, and serving the Lord. He was so proud to be a part of Field Church. He loved watching his son, Fraser, and Daughter-in-law, Christina, lead together with their children each week. He was also so thankful to be able to walk his daughter, Meg, down the aisle and give her away to Jon, whom he came to love so much. As well as being able to see them welcome his 5th grandchild, Claire. He adored and was devoted to his wife, Kristin, for 56 years. They took great care of each other and left a legacy of devotion and faithfulness for their children and grandchildren.
Greg was preceded in death by his parents and 3 brothers: John Armstrong, George Armstrong, and Jeff Armstrong. Left to remember him with joy are: his wife Kristin Armstrong, daughter Margaret Krape (Jonathan Krape), son Fraser Armstrong (Christina Armstrong), beloved grandchildren Cadence Armstrong, Cole Armstrong, Kenzie Armstrong, Clay Armstrong, and Claire Krape, a brother Larry Armstrong, a sister Barbara Armstrong, and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Greg was absent from his body and present with the Lord Jesus. We miss him, but we do not grieve as those without hope. We have a sure hope that we will be reunited in heaven someday! We love you, Dad! "See ya real soon:" at the gate!
Memorial Service will be held Monday, November 24, 2025, at 6:00 PM, at Field Church inside First Baptist Church Community Outreach Building.
