All of our lives are better because of Greg Orth and what he did for people for so many years. We will miss him and the contributions that he could have continued to make. Truly a life of dedication too soon gone.

Bill & Orth family,
Not only has Woodbury and Mn lost a great man, his family & extended family has lost a quiet but awesome man in Greg.

Greg was my cousin, his biological dad and my dad were brothers. His dad (WILLIAM Smith), was killed in a horrible accident also, before he was born.

When I was headed to college in Winona, in 1976, Greg met me for lunch and gave me mace. He said I know you won't need it but just in case.

I am so sorry for the loss of such a great man, brother, father, grandfather and cousin. My prayers are with you.

I was deeply touched by Greg's sudden death. Still hard to believe, but God knows why these things happen. Although I have known Greg for a little over a year when I joined the Rotary Club, I was particularly impressed by his dedication to community service and the encouragement that he gave me to participate in the Woodbury Days fundraising activity that he led. He was a very kind, gentle and considerate person. He will certainly be sorely missed. May his soul rest in perfect peace, and may the loved ones that he left behind be comforted!

Greg was so much a spirit of the Rotary Club that enticed me to join 3 years ago. His gentle manner, knowledge, and care and concern for others helped gain my respect just has he had gained the respect of so many others through the years.

He lived and contributed to the values of Rotary in both quiet and public ways. He educated us about the role of police, and other city and county officials in making our community the best it can be. He sought ways for us to get involved, and led some of those efforts directly. His leadership of our annual fundraiser at Woodbury days seemed effortless; yet the operations and results got better and better every year. What Greg committed to, he did; and he did it well.

I am aware of the losses he suffered in recent years, and his resiliency in creating a future for himself that would move beyond his grief. I am so happy for the delight he took in is family, his travels, and his service to the community. It is somehow comforting to know he had those moments after so much hardship.

I have been privileged to have my life enriched by knowing Greg, and will remain eternally sad that he has been taken from our lives so soon.

My deepest sympathy to his loved ones and family,

Fred Bartl

• It is with personal regret that I did not get to know Greg better than I did. I echo the thoughts of many when I say he was a quiet, unassuming presence who always made sure that he always followed through on what he said he was going to do. His sense of commitment to the community, what he accomplished on behalf of it in his unassuming way, his attention to detail, and his willing hand will be sorely missed by all who knew him – and many who never had the privilege

From the Family of Rotary to the family of Greg. While I did not know Greg personally, it is no surprise to hear how much he did for his community professionally and personally. He truly reflected the Objects of Rotary, serving in the capacity of Vocational Service for his club. This avenue of service is a reflection of his character as it includes the goal of high ethical standards. You will be missed by many - - including those you did not even know, but were recipients of your "Touching Hearts" deeds. My sympathies to your family and friends - - Dianne Nesvig, Rotary Past District Governor

It was truely a pleasure and privlege to have known Greg over 40 years. I'm left with wonderful memories of our Mankato State college days, the Kato Ballroom and Gage Center. The years we were all involved in Police service in the Metro area, and in recent years running into each other and having long, happy conversations. There was a part of my family with him at the end, and I take solice in that. Greg was a class act! My smypathy to the entire family.

Although I have known Greg for less than two years, I have good feelings about him and the way he lived his life. He was quiet but friendly. When he took on a task he followed through on it with determination and saw to its completion.

My sympathy to the family.

We have lost a great man in Greg. I knew Greg through the Woodbury Rotary Club and as a leader in the community. I was a member of the Woodbury Rotary club for about a year. I am now a member of the Lake Elmo Rotary Club. On behalf of the Lake Elmo Club and myself our deepest sympathy goes out to your family. You will be in our prayers.

I also knew Greg as the County Commissioner from Woodbury. Your leadership on that board will be missed as well.

The only consolidation is that Greg will be reunited with his wife who proceeded him in death. What a great place for his funeral, Guardian Angels, and to be buried, I assume, next to his late wife.

I hope that Greg will able to use his heavenly influence with the powers that be to seek a little divine intervention to end the conflicts in Kenya (where I will be going in the next couple of days), Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine and else where in the world where their is conflict. With his law enforcement background, he will know what needs to be done.

Love and miss him.

Chief Orth,
I always appreciated your strong leadership and innovative thinking. Thanks for giving me so many opportunities. You were able to bring ideas to life (in spite of bureaucracy) which really helped people; you were a public servant in the truest sense. The citizens of Woodbury and Washington County were fortunate to have benefited from your commitment and vision.

Condolences to the family. Greg was a rookie cop, just hired when I met him. He helped law inforcement grow and mature in Woodbury. When he integrated Police, Fire and EMS, he started a new era and approach to public safety. As a leader in fire rescue I spent many hours working with Greg. He was one of the highlights of my volunteer career in Woodbury. Now he goes with the other Woodbury Pioneers, Orv Bielenberg, Howard Radke, Mike Dulles. Gods Speed Greg

I became friends with Greg when we were freshmen in Mankato. Although I haven't seen Greg in many years, I've been aware of his accomplishments and his status in the community. What a wonderful man he was. I'm so sorry that his life was taken much too early.
