Gregory Joseph Treague, age 69, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2025, surrounded by his loving family, following an 18-month battle with late-stage lung cancer.
Greg was born on July 29, 1955, in St. Paul, MN, to Agnes Mortensen and Joseph Yep. After the passing of his father, Ed Treague became a guiding presence in his life, later becoming his stepfather and sharing his last name. In 1969, the family relocated to Danbury, WI, where they operated the Village Inn Café and later the China Doll restaurant in Webster.
A 1973 graduate of Webster High School, Greg enlisted in the U.S. Army and began basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. A family emergency brought him back home, where he pursued service in other ways. He worked as an EMT in Amery and Danbury, then as a police officer in Minong, and later served as Chief of Police in Siren. He was also the charter president of the Webster Jaycees.
On December 16, 1978, Greg married Darlene Jensen, whom he met while she was working at the family restaurant in Danbury. Together, they raised two children, Sarah and Jeremiah, and built a life filled with love, laughter, and good food. Greg was known for his cooking of Chinese and American cuisine. Greg's career with the Wisconsin DNR spanned over 25 years. What began as a high school ride-along evolved into a lifelong vocation. He served as a fire tower watchman and later as a forest fire technician. Known by his call sign "Webster 3," Greg was proud to protect and preserve the land he loved. He retired in 2011 and spent his later years devoted to his family and his passion for firearms and outdoor life - enjoying hunting, fishing and camping. He cherished time in nature and took great joy in sharing that love with his six grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Papa." He will be remembered for his strength, humor, generosity, and devotion to his loved ones.
Greg was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, William Yep. He is survived by his wife of over 46 years, Darlene; sister Vicky Phil; brother Scott (Anna) Treague; daughter Sarah (David) Velez; son Jeremy (Cheryl) Treague; and grandchildren Devyn, Isabella, and Sophia Velez, and Ray, Alex, and Ethan Treague. He is also fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, extended family, and lifelong friends.
The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers and institutions who supported Greg during his illness, including St. Croix Clinic and Hospital, Spooner Health Center, Essentia St. Mary's in Duluth and Superior, Regional Hospice Services, and Yellow River Pharmacy.
A visitation will be held on Friday, June 27, 2025, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Swedberg-Taylor Funeral Home in Webster. Online Condolences may be expressed at www.swedberg-taylor.com.
A private celebration of Greg's life will be held at a later date.
