Greta T. Crandall

1934 - 2025

Greta T. Crandall was born on October 23rd, 1934 in Granville, New York. She passed away at home surrounded by loved ones on October 20th, 2025, three days shy of her 91st birthday. Greta graduated from Burr and Burton Seminary in 1953 and married her first husband, Ken Mason, that same year. Greta worked at jobs ranging from polishing glasses at the Barrow's House to operating telephones, and directing traffic for road construction projects. She married her second husband, Ahial Crandall, on September 12th, 1981 and proceeded to become a community leader in the town of Peru. She enjoyed working as the Assistant Town Clerk of Peru for 14 years and serving as a Deacon of the Peru Congregational Church. In her later years she became a surrogate Grandmother to many children in the community as their caregiver, taking them into her heart like her own. Greta and Ahial spent 25 years going on adventures and enjoying their growing family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren together. Some of their favorite activities included camping, playing cards and games, going to gun shows together, spending winters in Florida, and making improvements and enjoying time with family and friends at their cabin in the Northeast Kingdom. Greta was known for her strong character and many talents, including crafting, beautiful projects while knitting and quilting. Every new baby to the family received a special quilt or blanket. Her cookies were famous and her baked beans were well loved throughout the state of Vermont and beyond. Greta was pre-deceased by her husband, Ahial Crandall, her son Jeffrey Mason, her stepson Daniel (Penny) Crandall and her stepdaughter, Katherine (Jim) Sessions. She is survived by her daughter Melinda Beebe and stepsons William (Terry) Crandall and Almon (Linda) Crandall. Greta is also survived by her legacy of 14 cherished grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren who she shared stories about every opportunity she had. Her family was by far Greta's greatest joy and pride. A service in celebration of Greta's life will be had held at the Peru congregational Church on Thursday, October 23rd, 2025 at 2:00PM, All are welcome. The service will be followed by gathering to continue the celebration at Johnny seesaw's from 3:00PM to 6:00PM
