Funeral services for Hamp Maurice Baker, 91, of Ringling, are scheduled for 2:00 P.M., Monday, April 28, 2025, at the First Baptist Church in Ringling, with Bro. David Baker and Bro. Doug Hickman officiating. Interment will follow at Dixie Cemetery in Stephens County. Services are under the direction and care of Alexander Gray Funeral Home in Ringling.

Hamp was born on May 3, 1933, in Loco, Oklahoma, to the late Mr. David Jeff Baker and Mrs. Ida Leona (Friels) Baker. He departed this life on April 23, 2025, in Oklahoma City.

Growing up in Loco, Hamp demonstrated an early commitment to education, graduating from Fox High School. Immediately after high school, he began his lifelong career in the oilfield industry. In the early 1950s, Hamp founded Baker Construction Company, marking the beginning of a remarkable career that touched many lives. In 1974, he took on a significant role as an Oklahoma Corporation Commissioner, serving with distinction until 1985. His tenure was highlighted by his impactful public safety campaign, “Hamp Baker says Drive with Care,” one of the most recognized slogans of the 1970s.

Beyond his official duties, Hamp was widely respected for his tireless advocacy for public safety and the responsible use of energy resources. After his years in public service, he returned to the oilfield as the owner and operator of Lann Co. Hamp's passion for the industry remained strong well into his 90s, as he continued actively pulling his own oil wells—a testament to his dedication and admirable work ethic.

His commitment to public service also extended to energy advocacy, where he collaborated with the National Association of Energy Users to promote the use of Oklahoma Natural Gas, further enhancing his impact on the state’s energy landscape.

A devoted Christian, Hamp attended Graham Assembly of God for many years, living out the values he held dear. He will be remembered not only for his contributions to the oilfield and public service but also for his passion, integrity, and the unique spirit he brought to every endeavor. His slogan, “Put your stamp on Hamp,” remains a testament to the lasting mark he left on his community and the inspiration he provided to all who knew him.

Preceding him in death were his parents, David and Ida Baker; his daughter, Erica Baker; and his siblings, Retha Heinz, Dimple Varnell, Hershall Baker, and Harold Baker.

Survivors include his children: Lana Dougherty and husband Curtis of Norman, OK; Cindy Morris and husband Mark of Ringling, OK; and Craig Baker and wife Donna of Forney, TX. He is also survived by his sister, Rozella Pevehouse of Ratliff City, OK; his grandchildren, Sheila Johnston, Chris Morris, Emily Valverde, Matthew Baker, Brittanie Baker, and Emily Fulwood; 18 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, other family members, and many dear friends.

Pallbearers will be Alex Blake, Chris Morris, Matt Baker, Barrett Morris, Dalton Morris, Josh Valverde, Tom Coffey, and Gunnar Valverde.

Honorary bearers will be Mike Anderson, Clint Walker and Larry Forsythe.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., Sunday evening, at the Alexander Gray Funeral Home Chapel in Ringling.
