Haney Stephenson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Crouse Funeral Home on Mar. 9, 2026.
Haney Joe Stephenson, age 77 of Mt. Vernon, passed away at his home surrounded by family on Saturday, March 7, 2026.

Joe was born on June 21, 1948, in Ashland, Kentucky, the son of Homer and Zetta (Sturgill) Stephenson. He married Brenda Gale Compton on August 5, 1970, in Hickory Hills and she preceded him in death on January 21, 2025.

He is survived by two daughters, Penny Stephenson-Woolwine and husband Mark of Champaign and Kelly Stephenson Peterman and husband Matthew of Mt. Vernon; grandchildren, Lauren Nicole Stephenson Peterman, Mark Elliot Woolwine, and Kyle Woolwine; and siblings, Lois Sizemore and Larry Stephenson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and siblings, Jean, Belva, Ethel, Bonnie, Wayne, and Roger.

Joe was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon. He was an analyzer and supervisor for the Citgo Oil Refinery. He enjoyed fishing, camping, farming, spending time on his tractor, drinking coffee on his front porch, and his Tuesday mornings spent at the club. Joe will be remembered for his kindness and the time spent with his family. He very much treasured the time spent attending his grandchildren's school events, cheerleading events, concerts and musicals.

A Memorial Service for Haney Joe Stephenson will be held at 5:00 pm on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon with Jason Webb officiating. A time to visit with the family will be held from 4:00 pm until the time of the service. Memorial contributions can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or the Sunshine Center Senior Meal program and can be received at the church or at Crouse Funeral Home in Salem.
