LTC Barnes was born on August 18, 1919 in Guthrie, Oklahoma and died following a short illness at Northeast Baptist Hospital, San Antonio, Texas April 4, 2009. He was predeceased by his daughter Virginia Sue Kendall in 1982. He is survived by: his loving wife of 67 years, Ethel Virginia Barnes of San Antonio, grandson Andrew Kendall (Rebecca) of Denton, Texas, and Cpt. David Kendall (Cathy) currently serving in the U.S. Army in Iraq. LTC Barnes is also survived by two great grandchildren, son-in-law Charles Kendall of Dallas, and a host of other relatives and friends. LTC Barnes graduated from Texas A&M University, class of 1942. While at A&M "Barney" played the Baritone in the Aggie band. Upon graduation he was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army, Artillery Branch. He then attended both the Artillery Basic Course and Liaison Pilot School. He immediately joined his unit in Europe and adjusted artillery from his L-4 from Normandy to Berlin. Following WWII and his tour in the Constabulary in Berlin he served in the U.S. Border Patrol until he was recalled to the Army for Korea. LTC Barnes completed his active service in the U.S. Army and retired from Fort Rucker, Alabama in 1966. Barney was a lifelong Methodist, a Mason, and a member of the Shrine Band, Beethoven Band, Mannerchor, Texas A&M Aggie Club and Airstream Club. The Barnes' traveled extensively to participate in many Airstream rallies all over the globe. LTC Barnes loved Ethel, his family, the Army and his country passionately, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 8, at 11:30 A.M. at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
