Harold Block, 91, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away on Friday afternoon, January 17, 2025. He was born in Coney Island, New York, on July 1, 1933. Harold was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Audrey; his son, Steven; his parents, Max and Sadie Block; and his brother, Marvin Block.
He is survived by his sister, Ruby Cohen; his son, Alan Block (Michelle); his daughter-in-law, Lisa Block; his cherished grandchildren, Jason Block (Talie), Linsey Van Meter (Matt), Sari Weprin (Jacob), and Jacob Block (Kristen); and eight adored great-grandchildren. Harold also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will miss him deeply.
Harold, known to all as "Hal," was a true Columbus institution. For nearly 60 years, he was the proud owner and founder of Block's Hot Bagels, a beloved local business that became a staple in the community. His dedication to his work was unwavering, often working seven days a week, even into his nineties. Hal's generosity and commitment touched countless lives, and his presence in the community was felt far and wide.
A proud veteran of the Korean War, Hal served his country with honor. He was also an active member of the Leo Yassenoff Jewish Community Center, where he contributed to the community and served on its board. Hal was a social man, often spending time at Scioto Downs or dining out with friends around town. His zest for life and love of good company were evident to all who knew him.
Above all, Hal will be remembered for his deep love and devotion to his family. He was a doting husband, a proud father, and a grandfather whose heart swelled with joy for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His family was his pride and joy, and he treasured every moment spent with them.
In honor of his many years of service to the Columbus community, Block's Hot Bagels at 6115 McNaughten Road will be closed on Sunday, January 19, 2025.
A funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM on Sunday, January 19, 2025, at Agudas Achim Synagogue, 2767 E. Broad St. Burial will follow at New Agudas Achim Cemetery. The family will observe Shiva on Sunday evening at Lisa Block's residence.
