Obituary published on Legacy.com by Clancy-Lucid Funeral Home on May 8, 2025.
Patricia Christine Lucey, admired for her teaching, creativity, and playful sense of humor passed away at her home on April 27th surrounded by family and lots of love.
Patricia was born on June 25, 1940 in Braintree, MA, the daughter of A. Russell and Cecelia Lucid. She will be immensely missed by her loving husband of 58 years, Alexander A. Lucey III and her five children: Deborah Shephard and husband Steve (Rexford, NY), John Lucey and wife Annie (Bedford, NH), Joseph Lucey and wife Maureen (North Yarmouth, ME), Jason Lucey and wife Katherine Cox (Dover, NH), and Ali Lucey (Merrimac, MA). Affectionately known as "Garbie," she will be fondly remembered by her eight grandchildren: Luc Shephard, Jake Shephard, Danielle Lucey, Joshua Lucey, Abigail Lucey, Gabriel Lucey, Gaelan Lucey, and Tynan Lucey. She was predeceased by brother Russell Lucid and is survived by siblings Mary Riley and Vin Lucid, and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.
Patricia was a consummate teacher. She graduated from Bridgewater State Teachers College, and spent her first years teaching elementary school. She then found her passion as a preschool teacher at Pentucket Workshop in Georgetown, MA where she forged lifelong friendships. "Ms. Pat" was known for creative ways of connecting with children of all abilities, such as "Ronny the Rope," a simple piece of string that came alive to engage even the shyest of children. As a mother of five, her teaching prowess was put to good use. She spent countless hours as a 4H leader, cub scout den mother, CCD teacher, brownie leader and was a vocal sideline advocate and at times an unsolicited assistant coach for her children in youth sports.
Patricia was admired for her prolific creativity. Through her numerous projects, Patricia left us with a physical imprint of herself to be cherished. She brought to life thousands of creations including quilts, rugs, clothing, dolls, stuffed animals, jewelry, wall hangings, decorations, paintings and more. She was an expert quilter and artisan and a mentor to many. She taught classes at regional quilt shops, exhibited her work at quilt shows and was an active member in the Merrimack Valley Quilters Guild and Essex County Needlecraft Guild. Through this community, she built numerous lifelong friendships, including the close-knit group "Seven Sisters or Sew."
She touched many lives through personalized hand-made gifts. Her grandchildren cherish their versions of "Sheldon," a knit stuffed turtle with a personalized costume. Quilts adorn the beds and walls of families' and friends' houses commemorating weddings, births and other life events. She was the master of special gifts and messages of support. Her creations serve as a lasting connection to her spirit.
Patricia was a fierce advocate and champion for inclusivity and celebrating the gifts of people of all abilities. The greatest example of this was her lifelong advocacy for her daughter Ali but also for countless others. Patricia would stand up for anyone she loved and who she felt was wronged (even when some of us didn't really deserve it). Pat was a trailblazer and not afraid to challenge systems and institutions that were inequitable. She was a four foot eleven inch force.
Cape Cod was Patricia's "happy place." She spent summers there as a child and as a teenager, met her partner of 58 years. She spent precious time in her cottage and on her beloved beach with her dogs, friends, children, children-in-law, and grandchildren. She loved swimming, kayaking, "talking to God", chatting with friends and strangers alike, and people-watching. Every morning she would set up chairs and stake her claim to prime real estate on "her beach," a place where her spirit inhabits every grain of sand.
