Harold Jackson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Allen Funeral Home and Crematory on Oct. 31, 2025.
Heaven gained an angel Saturday, October 25 as Harold Eugene Jackson, 99, passed peacefully at Community Hospital South in Greenwood, Indiana. Harold was born July 14, 1926 to Henry and Ethel (Ogle) Jackson in Greencastle, Indiana, where he grew up and met his wife, Lillian who he affectionately called "Toots". He graduated from Fillmore High School in 1944 and married Lillian on October 9, 1946, after two years in the United States Navy.
After he married Lillian they lived in Mount Meridian from 1946 to 1951, after which they moved to Brownsburg, Indiana, when he became a Trooper with the Indiana State Police. He retired as a Detective First Sergeant in 1973 and was hired by the Indiana University Police Department, where he coordinated the Cadet Program, where he influenced the lives of several men and women now serving across the world in law enforcement. He retired in 1990 after 39 years in law enforcement.
While in Brownsburg he was active with the Calvary United Methodist Church, the local FOP, Boy Scouts, and the Masons. He had three sons and enjoyed their participation in athletics. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching all sports, especially after they moved to Bloomington and became neighbors to Coach Bobby Knight. He loved going to watch the Hoosiers, both men's and women's teams at Assembly Hall for many years. After moving to Bloomington he was member with the First United Methodist Church for many years, establishing a scholarship fund at the church. He was very active with the Senior Games, Area 10 on Aging volunteer of the year, and initiating the inaugural "Seniors vs Boomers" basketball game to raise food for the Monroe County Food Bank. He played on the church softball team until he turned 80 and was inducted into the Bloomington Softball Hall of Fame. He was also a recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash in 2018
He and Lillian enjoyed traveling. They visited all 50 states and also made trips overseas to Israel, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. They volunteered on mission trips to El Salvador (People Helping People) and several trips to various states in the US with Habitat for Humanity. He enjoyed square dancing, flower gardening, and tinkering down in his barn. He enjoyed traveling with his son's and their families on vacations and fishing trips.
Harold is survived by his three sons, Mick (Carol) Jackson of Lawrence, IN., Rick (Denise) Jackson of Greenwood, IN., and Jim (Cindy) Jackson of Jasper, GA. He also has eight grandchildren, Matthew (Natalie) Jackson of Indianapolis, Emily (Les) Stretch of Marietta, GA., Sarah (John) Stanley of Katy, TX., Christopher (Lindsey) Jackson of Greenwood, IN., Whitney (Chuck) Swain of Rockville MD., Erin (Grant) Curry of Avon, IN., Lindsay (Nathan) Green of Murfreesboro, TN., and Daniel (Rachel) Jackson of Canton, GA. He has 20 great grandchildren and a special friend, Vicki Jackson, of Avon, IN.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 78 years, Lillian; parents Henry and Ethel (Ogle) Jackson, brothers Marvin and Edwin. The family wishes to invite all who can and are able to attend visitation on Sunday, November 16 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM with the service following at 1:00. Visitation and service will be at Allen Funeral Home, 4155 South Old State Road 37, Bloomington, IN. A private family graveside memorial will be conducted at the Fillmore Cemetery where he will be laid to rest following the service.
