Harry or "Hale Hale Boy" Kama

Harry K. Kama, known by his family as "Hale" or "Hale Boy", passed away on Monday, September 29th, 2025 at Maui Memorial Medical Center. He leaves behind his daughter, Angela (Robert) Shepard; four grandsons, Tyler (Miranda Long), Evan, Noah and Gabriel; great-grandson, Ezra; three siblings, Irene Vinge, David (Gayle) Kama, and Winona Tomita; and 10 nieces and nephews. Harry was preceded in death by both parents, Pua & Henrietta Kama; his brother, Kapualeilani Kama; and his nephew, Eric Vinge. Harry was born on August 9th, 1949 in Wailuku, Maui. He was a proud alumni of Baldwin High School (class of 1967) and had kept in close contact with many of his classmates throughout the years. After high school, he became a pioneer for his congregation and spent some time overseas witnessing to people in places like Guam and Palau. He was also one of the first pioneers to open up Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Honoka'a on Hawaii Island. After serving his congregation, Harry decided to return home to Maui to pursue his true passion: music. He was a talented, self-taught, guitar and bass guitar player. Although he played in a band in high school, his music career really didn't start until he became one of the original members of the Waiehu Sons. After jamming with several different bands throughout the '70s, Harry decided to finally create a band of his own. And, in 1980, he became the band leader of the Sakuras. Many will remember Friday and Saturday nights throughout the '80s when the Sakuras played at Maui Palms Hotel, where their music turned strangers into friends and gave people reasons to smile, dance, and sing along. When he wasn't on stage entertaining, Harry spent some time working in different positions in hospitality. He worked for the Royal Lahaina Resort, The Whalers condominium, and Stouffer Wailea Beach Resort. Harry ended his work career at Marmac Ace Hardware where he retired as the Receiving Manager and, most importantly, where he made true lifelong friends that he considered family. Those who knew him would know Harry was an avid golfer; a great friend; a doting father, grandfather and great-grandfather; and a gifted musician. Though his guitar may rest now, his melody lives on in all of us. A funeral service for Harry will be held on Saturday, October 25th, 2025 at Nakamura Mortuary. Visitation will begin at 9:30am, with service at 10:30am, and final visitation from 11:00am - 12:00pm. Friends, family and all who shared in his music are invited to come together, remember, and keep his song alive. Harry's daughter and ohana would like to acknowledge with sincere appreciation the staff at Maui Memorial Medical Center. Mahalo to all the nurses, nurse aides, safety sitters, and doctors who provided care to Harry in his final days.
