Harry William Long, 87, of Grayson, Georgia passed away on January 13, 2026. He was born the second of eight children to the late Lawrence and Rosalia (Hall) Longbottom in
Cincinnati, Ohio on December 16, 1938.
Harry grew up in the Madisonville neighborhood of Cincinnati, as well as on a farm outside the village of Owensville, Ohio. He attended schools in Owensville and played football and basketball. In August 1954, Harry contracted polio. He spent a year in a recovery and rehabilitation center away from his family. He remembered how his parents and family members came to visit him every day. He graduated from McNicholas High School in Cincinnati and attended the University of Cincinnati. Harry met the love of his life, Elaine, on a blind date and they married in 1962 and started a family. They were married for 60 years until Elaine's passing in 2023. Harry worked in various capacities in trucking and transportation during his career. His last position was one in which he hired truck drivers, traveling throughout the country. He enjoyed spending time with his four children and nine grandchildren, as he attended as many band concerts, dance recitals, sports competitions and other events as he could. He enjoyed telling funny and adventurous stories of his youth. Harry kept up with the activities of each grandchild, following their successes and offering advice and counsel. Harry enjoyed music and learned to play the piano in his 50's. He also enjoyed singing and sang in a barbershop chorus group. He was a devout Roman Catholic and was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Lawrenceville.
Harry is survived by his children, Mark (Sheila) Long, Christine Lee and Michael (Laurie) Long as well as son-in-law Jay Brack; nine grandchildren, Shelby, Joshua, Jared, Joseph, Matthew, Katelyn, Sean, Jennifer and Lauren; sister Rose Neal and brothers, Edward, Daniel (Debbie), Joseph, Robert (Sharon) and James (Theresa) Longbottom. In addition to his wife and his parents, Harry is preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Brack, as well as his brother, Lawrence Longbottom, brother-in-law Gary Neal and sister-in-law Maureen and Beth Longbottom.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday January 24, 2026, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in
Lawrenceville, Georgia. Officiant: Father Henry Atem. Inurnment will be held immediately following the funeral mass at St. Lawrence Catholic Church Columbarium. A reception will follow at Cogswell Hall at the church.
