Harry Pope Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sarah L. Carter's Funeral Home - Northside on Dec. 15, 2025.
Harry Pope Jr. was born on October 15, 1931, in Armstrong, Florida, to Harry Pope Sr. and Catherine Spencer Pope. He was reared in Jacksonville, Florida and attended local schools in Duval County and at an early age, he accepted Christ and was baptized at St. John Missionary Baptist Church. Later in life, he united with The Church of Jesus Christ of Apastolic Faith. He was a decorated Boy Scout and later mentored young men as a Boy Scout troop leader. He married his childhood friend and later sweetheart Annie Lee Olds Pope in 1955, and to this union, six children were born.

Mr. Pope honorably served his country as a decorated veteran of the United States Army. He fought bravely on the front lines during the Korean Conflict, where he was injured in battle. For his courage and heroism, he was awarded two Bronze Stars, honors of which he was justifiably proud.

Upon returning home, he briefly worked as an auto mechanic before beginning a distinguished career with the United States Postal Service. While being employed by the Postal Service, he represented his fellow employees as shop steward of their local union. In this capacity, he helped to ensure that all union reps, especially African American, employees received fair and equitable treatment during the challenging decades of the 1960s and 1970s. He was very proud of "The Mailhandlers Times", which was a newsletter that he authored and published to foster solidarity amongst local union members. During his 50 years as a postal employee, he was decorated with virtually every award that the Postal Service awarded. Mr. Pope loved his family and adored his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Mr. Pope gained his heavenly crown on Saturday, December 6, 2025, and was predeceased by his devoted wife of 69 years, Annie Lee Olds Pope; parents, Harry Pope Sr., Catherine Sams, and Robert M. Sams (stepfather), and sons Brian Keith Pope, Tyler Spencer Pope, Sr., and Marc Cameron Pope, Sr. He leaves to mourn his passing, but cherish his memories, his children Michael L. Pope, Karla Champion (Michael), and Eric G. Pope (Zandra); grandchildren, Reginald B. Graham (Trisha), Jessica D. Graham, Danielle T. Pope, Tatiyanna Wesley, Te'Kayla Pope, Alyssa Pope, Marc C. Pope, Jr, and Tyler S. Pope, Jr.; great-grandchildren, David C. Graham and Elizabeth N. Graham; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Mr. Pope is already missed but his memory will continue to inspire and comfort those who were blessed to know him.
