Harry Pritchett Obituary

PRITCHETT, Jr., Harry

The Very Rev. Harry H. Pritchett, Jr., a beloved spiritual leader, gifted storyteller, and creative force, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2025, in Atlanta, surrounded by his three children. Harry faced his final years with remarkable grace, often saying, "I am blessed, beyond the telling." He was 89 years old.

Born and raised in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Harry grew up surrounded by the warmth of his family and the vibrancy of the South. His parents, Harry H. Pritchett (Papa) and Margaret Partlow Pritchett (Mama Sis) also raised Boo, Katie and Kat, Harry's loving sisters. As a child, Harry displayed a passion for creativity, whether playing piano, immersing himself in Broadway musicals, or painting.

Harry married his childhood friend and lifelong sweetheart, Allison McQueen, in 1956. Their marriage, which spanned 62 years until Allison's passing, was a true partnership built on love, laughter, and shared creativity. Together, they raised three children, Sonny, Margaret, and Doug. Each child carries forward Harry's artistic spirit and zest for life.

Harry's academic and leadership prowess was evident during his time at the University of Alabama, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and president of The Jason's Honor Society, recognizing the forty most outstanding men on campus. Following his service in the U.S. Army, he answered a deeper calling, attending Virginia Theological Seminary and graduating in 1964. Harry also received honorary Doctor of Divinity degrees from Centre College of Kentucky (1981), The University of the South (2007), and The Episcopal Theological Seminary of Virginia (2014), illustrating his great intellect and commitment to learning.

Harry's early ministry included serving as curate at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Birmingham, Alabama (1964-1967), and as rector of St. Thomas' Episcopal Church in Huntsville, Alabama (1967-1975). During this time, he combined his love for theology and creativity, composing "Sunday School songs" on his ukulele, later published as the God Is A Surprise songbook. His tenure as director of Field Education at The University of the South School of Theology (1975-1979) and Archdeacon of the Diocese of Alabama (1979-1981) further cemented his reputation as a compassionate and innovative leader.

In 1981, Harry became rector of All Saints' Episcopal Church in Atlanta, where he served for 16 transformative years. There, he launched vital outreach programs, including a ministry for those affected by AIDS and a homeless shelter. His commitment to community and justice left a lasting legacy. The Rev. Simon Mainwaring, All Saints' current rector, described Harry's time at All Saints' as a "golden era," marked by the creation of enduring programs such as the Covenant Community, the Midtown Assistance Center, Refugee Ministries, and the parish's longstanding connection with Kanuga. These initiatives, paired with his compassionate leadership during the AIDS crisis, exemplified Harry's ability to lead with courage and love.

In 1997, Harry's journey led him to New York City as the 8th Dean of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, one of the world's largest cathedrals. Harry arrived during a pivotal time, bringing his visionary leadership to strengthen the Cathedral's religious, cultural, and educational programs. He revitalized the Cathedral's Board of Trustees and implemented a bold real estate initiative to secure the institution's financial future. His tenure left an indelible mark, earning both Harry and his wife Allison a permanent plaque in the nave commemorating their extraordinary contributions.

After retiring from full-time ministry, Harry Pritchett dedicated his time to various interim and pastoral roles. He served as an interim member of the Community's Pastoral Care team at Virginia Theological Seminary, providing compassionate support to students and faculty navigating the challenges of theological education. In addition, he took on the role of Interim Rector at The Church of St. Luke in the Fields in Greenwich Village. Pritchett also served as a Pastoral Consultant at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Philip in Atlanta, offering his wisdom and experience to support the cathedral's clergy.

Beyond his professional achievements, Harry was a man of profound creativity and warmth. His personal reflections during a sabbatical in Manhattan became the book Morning Run, a work that resonated with readers for its honesty and spiritual insight. His sermons, infused with humor and humanity, had a unique ability to weave theology into everyday experiences, offering inspiration and comfort.

As an internationally recognized consultant in Christian education, Harry brought joy and wisdom to countless gatherings, often centering his programs on the power of storytelling. His ability to foster and sustain communities of love and connection over decades was unparalleled. His ministry changed lives-spiritually, emotionally, and personally.

Harry is survived by his three children, Sonny, Margaret, and Doug; as well as his in-laws, Jonathan and Poppy; and grandchildren, Mason, Allison and Forrest; and the many friends and parishioners who loved him. His life was a testament to the power of love, creativity, and the enduring strength of faith.

A service celebrating Harry's extraordinary life and ministry will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church, Atlanta, on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to All Saints Episcopal Church or the Camp McDowell scholarship fund, an instrumental place for his spiritual and personal development.

Harry H. Pritchett, Jr., will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his unwavering spirit, his joyful heart, and his profound ability to see and nurture the best in everyone he encountered.

Harry was the rector at All Saints (with a cast of invisibles as his associates). He shepherded me through confirmation as a former southern baptist and reformed christian. His patience and grace allowed this retched soul to embrace the church again. He was there for me and my partner at the time. He begrudgingly allowed an evensong to start and was thrilled with its success. Harry was such an amazing man, friend, and Rector- propped up by the amazing Allison. My prayers are with his family.

I am most grateful that Harry served as the chair of my discernment committee for Holy Orders at The Cathedral of St. Philip. I would not be a priest were it not for the manner in which he structured and lead this group.
Give rest, O Christ, to thy servant, Harry, with all thy Saints: where sorrow and pain are no more; neither sighing, but life everlasting.
Amen.

I have such fond memories of Harry and his wife. He kept it real. We would get to see him and enjoy his sermons at Saint Philips on various occasions. What a blessing he was to everyone.

As our curate at St. Luke's, Harry's joy in Christ was so important to me and my junior high aged youth group.
He was loving, funny, and gave us all a sense of truly belonging to the family of God the Father. He changed us all , infinitely.

I knew and loved Harry at Camp McDowell in the 1960s. My maiden name is Pritchard, and he left messages for me at Birmingham Southern College when he wanted me to be a counselor at Camp McDowell. This was a time when the only phone in the dorm was down the hall, and I got several notes that my dad called. My dad would say no, he didn´t call me. I finally hooked up with Harry and had a very meaningful week as a counselor on his staff. I´m sorry I never talked to him again. Kirksey Pritchard McIntosh. Daphne, AL.

Back in the early 90's when my husband and I were looking around at churches to join we tried All Saints. We went to the coffee hour and Harry came up to us to introduce himself and welcome us. He was the most personable, kind, funny, wise man. Needless to say we joined All Saints and had an amazing run with Harry and the "dream team" clergy. Our children were baptized there. I've never been a part of a more special baptism service with the personalized banners and the congregation signing as the babies were paraded through the church by the god parents. Harry made that beautiful place of worship a place that felt like home.
