Hattie Elizabeth Sullivan Green received her heavenly crown on January 23, 2024, after a valiant battle with dementia. Her faith in God and the prayers of God's Saints helped her make it through and ultimately gave her peace during her time of transition.
Hattie was the youngest daughter born to Mr. Clarence Sullivan and Pauline Burton Sullivan on September 10, 1928, in Fairview Township, Greenville County.
Hattie attended Rosenwald School and graduated from Geer High School. She attended Morris College in Sumter, SC and later graduated from Lincoln School of Nursing. She met her late husband Gilbert Green Jr while attending Morris College. They united in holy matrimony and in this union, they bore 6 children: Jonathan, Howard, Viola, Lelar, Gilbert, and Suze. Along with being a devoted wife and loving mother Hattie was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and later became a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church for over 50 years. She served as a Sunday school teacher, Secretary of Sunday School, Senior Choir Member, Deaconess, Missionary Member, and Flower Committee Member. For over 20 years she worked as the meal coordinator at First Baptist Church of Belton, SC on Wednesday nights as well as their special events. She named her own catering business 'Mrs. Hattie's Catering.'
Hattie is a long-time member of the Ladies Auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars, Thomasena Chapter #206 Order of the Eastern Star, and the Belton Lions Club. She served as a Scout Troop Leader of Brownie's Troop 131. She volunteered at the Zion Street Community Center Historical Board and was a member of Senior Solutions. Hattie was named the 1996 Anderson County NAACP Woman of the Year. She was honored as a Lifetime Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in 2006. In 2010 she received the Boy Scout Appreciation Award.
As a true Civil Rights Pioneer, in 2002 Hattie was elected as the first African American and the first woman into the Belton City Council, where she served until 2019. She was honored by the House of Representatives, the Belton Alliance, and the City of Belton with a dedication ribbon ceremony. In which a memoriam plaque and bench was presented in her honor where it can be seen in uptown Belton. In addition to her many honors and awards she received the highest civilian honor bestowed in the state with the order of the Silver Crescent. She was also awarded A Resolution 2018-028 which is to honor and recognize her many years of dedication and service to the communities of Anderson County and other matters related thereof.
She is preceded in death by her husband Gilbert Green Jr. Her parents Clarence and Pauline Sullivan. Two sisters Eddie-Pearl Clement and Dora Thompson. Three first cousins raised in the home as her brothers Leroy Sullivan, Leonard Sullivan, and David Sullivan. Grandson Tyvon Bruster, Great-Grandson Chrisopher Harper, and Great-Great Granddaughter Xiya Martin.
She leaves to cherish her fond memories; sons, Jonathan (Wanda) Green of
Spartanburg, SC, Howard (Vermell) Green of
Alcolu, SC, Gilbert Green III of Mauldin, SC; daughters, Viola Black, Lelar Black both of Belton, SC, and Suze Johnson of Columbia, SC. Grandma and GG to 20 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and 16 great-great grandchildren. As well as a multitude of nieces, nephews, a host of loving relatives, and devoted friends.
Funeral service for Hattie Green will be held on Sunday, January 28, 2024 at 2:00 pm at Mount Zion Baptist Church, Belton, SC with the interment to follow in the church cemetery.
Public viewing will be Saturday, January 27, 2024 from 1:00 pm until 8:00 pm at The Unity Mortuary of Anderson.
