Death Notice

Hazel Jean Blevins

1939 - 2022

Hazel "Jeannie" Blevins, 82, passed peacefully to her heavenly home Saturday, February 12, 2022, surrounded by her family. She was known to many as Ma Blevins, but she will always be lovingly remembered as Granny by her family.
She was born in Stecoah, North Carolina on November 28, 1939, the last born to the late Carl and Lona Jenkins. After graduating from Nebo High school, Jeannie went on to study and become a dental hygienist, first in Washington, DC and then in Danville, VA. She met and married the love of her life, John L. Blevins, Sr. during her time in Washington, DC.
Jeannie is survived by her children, John Blevins, Jr. (Patricia) of Sutherlin, VA; Gene Blevins of Salem, VA; and Christopher (Stephanie) of Ringgold, VA. Her greatest loves, her grandchildren, Frank Blevins, Brian Blevins, Erin Blevins and Jackson Blevins, will greatly miss her. She is also survived by her sisters, Lilla Livermore (Texas) and Darlene Cherry (North Carolina). Jeannie loved her family, including her extended family of many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, all of whom she claimed as her own.
In addition to her husband and parents, Jeannie was predeceased by her brothers, Elmo Jenkins, Harold Jenkins and sister, Wilda Blalock.
Jeannie was an avid baseball fan and you could often find her cheering on her hometown team, The Danville Braves. She often traveled to watch her great-nephews and grandson play baseball and could be heard cheering for them above the crowd. She also loved watching her grandsons play soccer at Southside Soccer and in local high school games and could be heard often telling the players to "mix it up." Jeannie also looked forward to watching her only baby girl, granddaughter Erin, dance and perform at recitals and shows.
To know Jeannie was to love her. She always spoke her mind and was the first to offer help when family, friends and neighbors needed it. Ma Blevins was often considered a substitute "Mom" by many. Above all else, she loved her family and was ALWAYS there to support and help them when needed.
The family will receive friends at the residence on Friday, February 18 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. A funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 19, 2022 at Norris Funeral Services, West End Chapel, 511 Church Avenue, Danville, VA 24541. A visitation will take place one hour prior to the funeral from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Danville-Pittsylvania Cancer Association, 233 Riverview Drive, Danville, VA or Blairs Fire and Rescue, 7100 US Hwy 29, Blairs, VA 24527.
