Hazel Blockman Obituary

Hazel Ruth Blockman left this world Sunday August 31, 2025. She was born in 1929 in Newcastle, England and raised in Glasgow, Scotland until the age of 9. From 1939 until 1945 the family lived in London during the second world war.

Hazel was raised in an orthodox Jewish home in England where her father was a Cantor in the synagogue. After World War II her father moved the family to America when he was asked to become the Cantor at the original Baron Hirsch Synagogue in Memphis.

It was here in Memphis that she met her husband, Dr. Joseph Blockman. She relished her role as wife, mother, aunt, daughter and friend to many. Her home in England was filled with music, cooking, baking and the visual arts and she carried these traditions with her to her new home in the south.

Her community service extended from being a past president of Hadassah, reading to the blind on public radio, working in the symphony offices, teaching knitting classes at the synagogue, knitting hats to ship to the soldiers during war times, teaching English to International children and entertaining for large family gatherings.

In her 96 years of life, she lived with great enthusiasm as she shared her passion to experience the different cultures of the world through her travels with her children and grandchildren. Her first and foremost love was family and tradition.

Hazel Blockman's life was and will, forever be cherished in the lives of her children
Karen Blockman Carrier & Harold E. Blockman (deceased); her grandchildren, Travis Carrier, Austin Carrier, and Laura Blockman; her daughter in-law, Denise Blockman; and all of her extended family.

Services will be held Wednesday September 3, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at Baron Hirsch Cemetery, 1499 Rozelle St. Memphis, Tenn. 38106.
