Hazel Henderson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Audubon Funeral Home & Cremation Services - Slidell on Mar. 4, 2026.
Hazel Rose Riecke Henderson, of Slidell, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2026, at the age of 97. Born on August 8, 1928, in the vibrant city of New Orleans, Louisiana, Hazel's life was a tapestry of love and dedication woven through the years.

The daughter of the late Carsten and Edith Riecke, Hazel grew up in a household where the value of family and hard work was instilled from a young age. She attended St. Anthony of Padua and later graduated from St. Mary's Dominican High School, where she developed a foundation of knowledge and grace that would carry her through life.

Hazel's entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly when she joined her husband, the late Buck Henderson, as the proud owner and namesake of Hazel's Po-Boys on Carrollton Ave. in New Orleans. Later in life, she embraced the role of a homemaker, pouring her heart and soul into creating a nurturing home for her entire family.

Hazel was married to her late husband, Dorthan "Buck" Henderson, for 72 years, and together, they built a loving family. She was preceded in death by her cherished daughter, Linda Richoux (the late Donald), and her legacy is carried on by her beloved children, Barbara Henderson and Shirley Jacques (the late Henry).

Hazel's joy was multiplied through her grandchildren: Heather Richoux Logue Krueger, Bradley Richoux, Benjamin Poché, and Melissa Samuels. She was also a proud great-grandmother to ten great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Hazel is also survived by her sibling, Kieran Schwartz (Don), as well as a host of extended family members and friends, all of whom she loved greatly.

Hazel leaves behind a legacy of cherished memories and a family that will continue to honor her spirit. Her presence will be deeply missed, but the impact she made on the lives she touched will be felt for generations to come.

Hazel's family would like to thank her devoted neighbors, Tim and Terrie Mathison, and her loving nephew, Danny Henderson, and his wife, Nancy, who were there for Hazel during the later years of her life and treated her with love and care.

The family would also like to express their sincere appreciation to the entire team at Oak Park Village. Their dedication, gentle care, and unwavering support meant more than words can express.
