Hazel Lorine Hurst Lucas (GeeGee), 96, left this world to be with Jesus on March 9, 2024. Her final moments were spent peacefully in the home of her daughter Melanie in Methuen, MA, and she was surrounded by family.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at Fox and Weeks in Savannah, GA at 10:00 am followed by a graveside ceremony at Bonaventure Cemetery. Memorial gifts are welcome and can be sent to Cowee Baptist Church in Franklin, NC in her memory.
GeeGee is the matriarch of the family and a follower of Jesus Christ. She loved to read her Bible, post daily Meditations online, and faithfully pray over her family. While unable to attend church in recent years, she loved her church in the mountains, Cowee Baptist Church in Franklin, N.C. and attended Bible Baptist Church in Savannah, Ga. Her life is a living example of the Bible verse, Ephesians 4:32 "And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ."
Known for her radiant smile, twinkling eyes, generosity, and loving spirit, GeeGee will be dearly missed by all who know her. She loved to talk about the return of Jesus to take His children home to live in Heaven forever. She is now with her Lord and Savior.
GeeGee loved the church and had many roles over the course of her life serving as a church secretary and in volunteer roles for Calvary Baptist Church in Savannah, GA. She grew up in Calvary and was baptized and married by Pastor John Wilder. She enjoyed sharing her Avon business for over 25 years.
GeeGee is the precious daughter of Eugene and Lula Hurst. She was born on August 24, 1927, in Savannah, GA, graduated from Commercial High School, and attended Armstrong State College. She was a loyal aunt to Effie Sharpe Martin (deceased) of Savannah, GA and Billy Barrett of Atlanta, GA, although they grew up as sister and brother.
She was married in 1951 to Clarence Ivey Lucas, who preceded her in death in 2008. They were married 57 years and had four children together. She is cherished and survived by her 4 children: Tom (Marsha) Lucas of Savannah, GA; Carla (Bruce) Ferguson of Gurley, AL; Melanie (Henry) Jezierski of Methuen, MA; and Holly (Wayne) Bessinger of Adel, GA), 20 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren, who she called her heritage from the Lord.
