Hazel Sanger Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 6, 2025.
Hazel Ann Douglas Sanger (1 February 1941 - 4 March 2025) was born in Glasgow, raised in Edinburgh, London, Helsinki and Beirut. Educated at St George's in Edinburgh, St Paul's School in London where she eventually became Head Girl, leading to a lifetime of taking charge; and read Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford.

Hazel married Paul Sanger and moved first to Charlotte then unexpectedly found herself Atlanta, settling in the late 1966. She began her financial career in the City in London where she was one of only a handful of women - a truism until late in her career. In Atlanta, she worked for Thorndike, Doran, Paine & Lewis/Wellington Management until the mid 80s before moving to Atlanta Capital Management, finishing her career with Arden Group, later purchased by BNY Mellon. Hazel served as President of the Association of Atlanta Charted Financial Analysts.

Hazel took great pride in her dedication to the boards of non-profits that she advised for many decades: The Atlanta Opera, CDC Foundation, The Trust for Public Land, Lady Margaret Hall and American Friends of Oxford University. She stood many years on the selection committee for Rhodes Scholars.

She is survived by her children, Georgina Sanger and Christopher Sanger; son-in-law, Charles Bowdoin Train; two grandchildren, Sophie Train and James Train; and two step grandchildren, Finn Greer and Evie Jane Harrison. She will be missed by her friends from far flung climes who experienced her wide intellect and doggedness in any intelligent and demanding discussion. To the end, Hazel maintained a deep sense of civic responsibility and used her abilities to leave the world a better place.
