Horan & McConaty Funeral Service & Cremation - Southwest Denver/LakewoodHeather Anne Stein, age 45, passed away at home surrounded by family members on November 11th, 2025. Heather was a graduate of Metro State University (Denver) and obtained her Juris Doctorate from Creighton University School of Law (Omaha, NE). Heather was an experienced prosecutor, starting with the Denver District Attorney’s Office, and later the 14th Judicial District (Grand County) where she was the Chief Deputy District Attorney. After leaving public office, Heather went into private practice with Anthony J. DiCola and later her own practice, Stein Legal Services. Heather was a pillar of the Grand County community, the legal community, and touched many lives throughout Colorado in both a personal and professional capacity. Heather volunteered and donated to support many public and private causes to better the community. Her legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of everyone she interacted with as well as many in the community she reached but never met.
While working at the DA’s Office in Grand County, she met John W. Stein. The two married in 2011. Immediately Heather was a beloved stepmother taking on John and his children, Faith, Matthew, and Trinity Stein. Shortly thereafter, Heather and John welcomed their own loving children, Luke and Jacob “Jake” Stein. Heather was preceded in death by her father, Charles J.B. Hughes, III. Heather is survived by her husband and children, her mother, Martha Shwayder, brothers Mark A. (Irena) Shwayder-Hughes and C.J. Hughes, and sister, Rebecca (Michael) Murphy. Heather was loved and survived by Drew (Jessica) Goldberg, Katherine Goldberg, and many more nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
Heather loved advocating for others. Her passion for law is well known. She loved spending time with family and friends, cooking, baking, swimming, paddle-boarding, traveling, attending special events, going to concerts and performing arts, the zoo, museums, and parks.
A memorial service of her life and legacy will be held on Saturday, December 13th, 2025, 1:00 PM, at Horan & McConaty, 3101 S. Wadsworth Blvd., Lakewood, CO 80227.
