Obituary for Helen Elisabeth Edge
Helen Elisabeth Edge was born on November 23, 1944, in Pickens, Alabama, to the late Robert Windham and Bertha Spence. On February 24, 1962, in Boston, Massachusetts, Helen united in holy matrimony with William Edge, Sr. Their union was blessed with four sons: Christopher, Nathaniel, Jonathan, and William Jr. before they parted ways.
Helen attended Boston Public Schools. Helen retired from Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Brookline, where she served faithfully in the Transportation Department and later worked directly with patients in the hospital's Holter Lab. At the same time, she held a part-time position with a cleaning company, supervising crews responsible for maintaining several high-rise office buildings in downtown Boston. Her work ethic was unmatched, and she carried every responsibility with pride and dedication.
Helen was a beautiful person who truly loved to have fun. She had a youthful soul and was never afraid to hop on rollercoasters with her grandkids, traveling, hosting for the holidays (she was an amazing cook) and enjoying past times with family. One of her favorite games to play was Monopoly (she enjoyed being the banker) and had a very competitive spirit. She embraced her role as the family matriarch with grace and without complaint. Whenever a family member needed support, she was there-ready to help in any way she could no matter how big or small. Her kindness, strength, and steady presence were felt by all who knew her.
Helen was predeceased by her parents, Bertha Spence and father Robert Windham, her late brother Eddie Carpenter, seven late half siblings and her former husband William Edge Sr., who passed a day later. She leaves to mourn her passing her half sister, Elwanda Windham, her sons: Christopher L. Edge, Nathaniel Edge, Jonathan Edge (Sharon), and William Edge Jr.; her five grandchildren – Carrus Brown (Katie), Desiree Washington (Kyle), Chrisshawn (Aly), Dara Garrison (John), and Jorden Edge; four step grandchildren, Anthony Upchurch, David Crawley, Ebony Flint, and Shanae Jones; four great-grandchildren – Aliya Brown, Cianna Brown, Myles Washington, Shaniah Washington and a host of step grand and great grandchildren, close former sibling in laws, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Helen's life was one of love, service, and quiet strength. Her legacy lives on in the family she nurtured, the people she touched, and the example she set for all who were blessed to know her.
