Helen Marie Jones Overton, 88, of 119 Emperor Landing Road, Edenton, NC, died Tuesday, October 22, 2024, in the Palliative Care Unit of ECU Health Chowan Hospital.
Mrs. Overton was born in Chowan County on June 9, 1936, and was one of four daughters born to the late Erie and Hazel Bass Jones. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Lee Overton, Sr., and by her sisters, Faye Harrell and Marjorie Smith.
A homemaker, Helen was never one that you wondered if she loved you. She just did. She was truly a light in this dark world that was too resilient not to shine and one who refused to let her light be blocked, hidden, or covered. Everyone that knew her saw that light because it was always on high beam! And even though her earthly life is done her light now shines in heaven and we believe Jesus has a job for her up there. Probably as the “head greeter” at the pearly gates. And here, her light still shines in the lives of those who love her.
A faithful member of Macedonia Baptist Church, through the years she had served in the Women’s Missionary Society, and in the children’s department teaching Sunday School, working with the Sunbeams, and at Vacation Bible School.
Surviving are her sons, Elmer Lee Overton, Jr. (wife, Tammy) and Bradley Erie Overton (wife, Reneé); her sister, Janet Winslow; her grandson, Ryan Overton (wife, Logan); her great-grandchildren, Finlee and Levin, all of Edenton; and many nieces, nephews, and other extended members of both the Jones and Overton families.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 24th, at 11:00 a.m. in Macedonia Baptist Church and will be conducted by her pastor, The Rev. Steve Hill. The burial will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family at the residence.
