Helen Sumner Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home & Crematory - DeLand from Jan. 28 to Feb. 3, 2026.
Helen M. (Schneider) Sumner, age 92, of DeLand, Florida, passed away on January 26, 2026. She was born on April 28, 1933, in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, to the late George Schneider and Anna Rieser Schneider.

Helen was a devoted woman of faith and was deeply involved in her church and community while living in Coraopolis. She was a longtime member of Riverdale Presbyterian Church, where she found joy in helping her church family and serving others.

Helen's bowling team was more than just a pastime; it represented a deep and lasting bond with her closest friends, affectionately known as "The Girls." Their camaraderie and shared experiences on and off the lanes were a source of great joy and support in her life.

An avid reader, Helen was an enthusiastic participant in her book club. She often shared her passion for literature by circulating a wide variety of books among her fellow members, fostering lively discussions and meaningful connections.

Helen loved her career at TransAmerica working with bonds and insurance. She embraced life fully, enjoying rounds of golf and the occasional thrill of gambling, both of which brought her happiness and relaxation. She also cherished the simple beauty of nature, frequently taking in the sights and sounds from the comfort of her porch and reflecting on the surroundings from which she grew up.

Broadly recognized as a woman of many talents, Helen was known for her strength and fierce independence. She firmly believed in fixing things herself, a quality she maintained well into her 80s. Despite her petite stature, she could often be found repairing her lawnmower or cleaning out her gutters, embodying her remarkable determination and self-reliance.

Helen was preceded in death by her sister Frances "Janie" (Schneider) Shaffer, her be-loved husband of 21 years, Frederick Lee Sumner, with whom she is now reunited, and stepdaughter, Judith Ann Hawk.

She is survived by her nieces, Sandra Shaffer Pickus (Mike), Kathy Shaffer and stepdaughters, Diana Lee Zeljak (Ted), Delores Jean White (Terry), Laura Lynn Bashay (Harold).

Visitation Saturday, February 7, 2026 from 12:30 until time of service at 1 PM at Copeland's Coraopolis, 867 Fifth Ave. Burial will be private at Coraopolis Cemetery.
