Henry Alfortish Obituary

Henry Edward Alfortish, age 95, passed away on January 19, 2023. Loving spouse of the late Doris Mae Alfortish. Father of David H. Alfortish, Sr. (Catherine) and Kevin J. Alfortish (Diana). Grandfather of David H. Alfortish, Jr., Blake Alfortish (Danielle), Stephanie A. Brown, Michael K. Alfortish (Meghan), Mary A. Cheramie (Cory). Great-grandfather of David III, Avery, Alec, Andi, Jacob, Chase, Cate, Lucy, Bowen, and Saylor. Henry was born on February 1, 1927 to the late Edward J. Alfortish and the late Myrtle E. Alfortish. Brother of Elroy Alfortish and the late Herbert, the late Lucille, the late Dorothy, the late Daniel, and the late Marion. He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews. Henry was one of seven children, born and raised in New Orleans. He served in the United States Navy in the Pacific during World War ll on board the USS Miami (CL89). As a Seaman 1° Class, Henry's ship conducted missions throughout the Pacific Campaign including the Marianas Islands and support activities for Okinawa and Iwo Jima. Henry received the World War II Victory Medal, The Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and The American Campaign Medal. Henry married his beloved wife, Doris, on August 10, 1948. They were married 65 years at the time of her death in 2014. He started working at a young age with his father and brothers in the cemetery business. He and his brothers were in business together for years as Alfortish Marble and Granite, Westlawn Cemetery and Westside Fence Company until they sold the businesses in 1987. Henry served on the Board of Directors of Fifth District Savings Bank for many years. Henry operated Alfortish Cast Stone for several years until he sold the business to his grandsons, David and Blake. Henry was a very kind man ready to help any and every one. He loved his wife and family dearly. He was a wonderful son, husband, son in law, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. All of the grandchildren have many memories spending time with Henry and Doris, especially playing card games with Henry! Henry loved to fish and was an excellent golf player. The family would like to thank everyone at Woldenberg Villas and Willow Wood for their impeccable care of Henry. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Military Veterans organization of your choice. Friends and family are invited to attend a funeral mass on Tuesday, January 31, 2023 in the chapel of Mothe Funeral Home, 2100 Westbank Expressway, in Harvey. Visitation will begin at 9:30AM. Interment will follow immediately at Westlawn Cemetery, 1225 Whitney Ave., in Gretna, LA. Please visit www.mothefunerals.com to view and sign the online guestbook.
