Henry Erwin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 21, 2025.
Henry Albert Erwin, Jr., beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on November 16, 2025, in Atlanta, Georgia, at the age of 80.

Born on February 22, 1945, in Fayette, Alabama, Henry was the son of the late Henry Albert Erwin, Sr. and Essie Euline White Erwin. He grew up in Winfield, Alabama, where he discovered his love for building. In middle school, he even built his own go-cart from materials he earned and bartered, then drove it to school to the amazement of his friends and teachers. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1963, then went on to earn a degree in Accounting from the University of North Alabama in 1966 and an MBA from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Henry began his professional career as an auditor with the U.S. Congressional General Accounting Office from 1966 to 1968. He later worked with Intertec Software in Huntsville, Alabama, and Chemical Processing of Georgia in Dalton. From 1979 to 1986, he served as Comptroller and Assistant Treasurer for Millmaster Onyx, a chemical conglomerate in New York City. In 1986, Henry established his own CPA practice at 1819 Peachtree Road in Atlanta, where he faithfully served clients and helped others start businesses for nearly four decades.

Beyond his career, Henry was deeply engaged in community and charitable service. He served as a board member of Education Health Centers of America and Turning Point in New Jersey from 1985 onward, giving his expertise and time to organizations that transformed lives.

Henry married the love of his life, Angela Mulzer Erwin, with whom he shared many years of adventure and companionship. Together, they enjoyed a life rich with travel, exploration, and time on their beloved farm, Doubletop Fields, located in the North Carolina mountains. Henry and Angela took great joy in building the farm's log cabin with 1850s logs from Angela's family farm in Indiana and in reviving its old apple orchard. His love of learning and travel took him around the globe-by car, by ship, and by curiosity-to more than 100 countries across all seven continents.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Angela; his daughter, Melinda (Mindi) Erwin Shelton, MD, and her husband, Peter James Shelton; his cherished grandchildren, Emma Grace, Benjamin Pearce, and Anna Katherine Shelton; sisters-in-law, Jean Ryan (George) and Becky Mulzer; nieces, Kay Carlo (Jim), Diane Townley (Tim), Beth Turner (Willie), and Carrie Ryan; nephews, Todd Taylor and Andrew Ryan; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Henry was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Hayley Elizabeth Erwin; his sister, Alice Ann Taylor; his brother-in-law, Galan Taylor; his mother-in-law, Roberta Mulzer; and his father-in-law, Edgar Mulzer.

The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the providers and caretakers at Grady Memorial Hospital for their skilled and compassionate care.

Family visitation will occur Saturday, November 22, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a celebration of life at 12:00 p.m. Both will take place at Bowen Funeral Home, 981 State Hwy 253, Winfield, AL 35594. Burial will be at Siloam Cemetery, 1903 County Road 36, Winfield, AL 35594.
