After a short period as a highway bridge designer with the Virginia Department of Transportation, he joined the University of Virginia Civil Engineering faculty in 1946, a position he held until his retirement as Professor Emeritus in 1984. Elizabeth and Anne,
I was so sorry to hear belatedly of the death of your father. I so enjoyed my interactions with him over the years and seeing him in Richmond at Sarah's funeral. I know my cousins the Marshalls have enjoyed a great friendship. My thoughts are with you.

I was a Civil Engineering student - BCE'59 and MCE "62. Henry was both one of my favorite professors and a good friend. He set a standard that I tried to follow through-out my academic career. I worked as a lab assistant for him in two surveying classes, getting to know him better than most student-faculty relationships. I will always remember him with great admiration and fondness. He was alwaya the quintesencial University of Virginia gentleman to me.

Today we received the sad news that Mr. Kinnier had passed away. I was a student in the Civil Engineering Department 1956-60 and Mr. Kinnier was my favorite professor. The last time we saw Mr. Kinnier was September 22, 2006 when he had dinner with a group of former students at the Ivy Inn. Mr. Kinnier was a fine gentleman and an outstanding representative of the University.

To all of the family:

Mr. Kinnier was a very dear customer of ours. We took care of all of his plumbing and heating and air conditioning services. He would stop by our office frequently to schedule his appointments and would come by to pay his bill as soon as he would recieve it. He was such a kind and sweet person that was always the same everytime we would see him. All of our service men were always pleased to do work for him and he would let them no how much he appreciated our services and praise our workers. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all through the loss of Mr. Kinnier, he will be deeply missed. We are so glad that he was able to live a long, productive life and he left many memories for everyone to cherish.

May God bless you all,
Staff @ JLK, Inc.

Mr. Kinnier inspired many generations of civil engineering students with his uniquely charming and effective teaching style which kept his students both entertained and stimulated to learn more. Nobody could make concrete structural design, a normally dry topic, more interesting than Mr. Kinnier. And beyond the classroom Mr. Kinner gave all of us an example to follow as a true gentleman in the best tradition of The University. Just before he launched into one of his many jokes and funny stories you could see from the twinkle in his eyes that a good one was coming. And his hand gestures, which punctuated his story telling - I can still see his hand slicing through the air in mid-story - left all of us in stiches. Mr. Kinnier had a heart of gold for his students and he dedicated his professional life to them. As one of his students who treasured all my moments with him, I'll always appreciate his kind and helpful guidance and support, and I'll always remember my times with him as being among the highlights of my years at UVa.

Oh, our hearts hurt with the loss of our good friend, Henry. What a treasure he was to so many, and especially to Our University. He gave of himself to so many, of which we are most appreciative to be included.....and, for him to come all the way to Lynchburg when we introduced Jim Aylor, the new Dean of the School of Engineering at UVA, to Lynchburg at Boonsboro .......that was phenomenal ! Our best to Susan, Irving, and Sara. How blessed you are to have had him in your lives for so long !

I was a graduate student of Mr. Kinnier during the middle 70s. I had great respect for Mr. Kinnier and he was a mentor as well as a friend of mine. Anytime I would be in the Charlottesville area, I would try to stop by and see both him and Mrs. Kinnier. I will sadly miss him!
