Chapel Hill, North Carolina - Henry Alfred "Al" Wilkinson III, 87, of Chapel Hill, NC, passed away on June 28, 2023. Born on October 26, 1935, in Cuthbert, Georgia, Al was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Al's surviving family includes his wife, Livvie Wilkinson; his daughter, Ellen Proctor; his son-in-law, Frank Proctor; his granddaughter, May Proctor; his nephew, Scott Wilkinson, and Scott's three children; Kate, Keira Louise, and Evan Wilkinson; his niece, Laura Wiley, and Laura's daughter, Logan Harris. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Alfried Wilkinson II; his mother, Hazel Roberts Wilkinson; and his brother, Lawrence Holt Wilkinson.
Al had a passion for science, golf, travel, the outdoors and his family. He graduated from Emory University in Atlanta, GA in 1956 and the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA in 1960. Following his education, Al served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy Medical Corps from 1961 to 1963. He then embarked on a successful career in pathology.
Al began his career as an assistant professor of pathology at Vanderbilt Medical School in Nashville, TN, from 1968 to 1971. He later joined the pathology department at Park View Hospital in Nashville, TN, from 1971 to 1974. From 1974 to 1991, Al was a valued member of the pathology department at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC, where he served as chairman of the department from 1977 to 1991. He also worked as a pathologist at the Medical Arts Laboratory in Oklahoma City, OK, from 1992 to 1997.
A man of faith, Al worshipped in recent years at The Chapel of the Cross in Chapel Hill, NC.
The family has organized a Memorial Service to Celebrate Al's Life. It will be held at The Chapel of the Cross, 304 East Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, NC, on July 3, 2023, at 11:30 AM.
