Herb W. Hoffman

Herb W. Hoffman, 89, of Hampton Township, died Friday, July 22, 2011, at Newton Medical Center. Born in Germany, Mr. Hoffman was raised in Garfield and moved to Sussex County in 1983. He was a field specialist for Kearfott Guidance & Navigation Corp. in West Paterson before his retirement in 1984. A World War II Army veteran, Mr. Hoffman was a member of VFW Memorial Post 5360 in Newton and American Legion Post 157 in Branchville. The son of the late Fred and Hewdivick (Rilke) Hoffman, Mr. Hoffman was predeceased by his first wife, Helga E. Hoffmann on November 8, 2001; his grandson, Joseph Eric LaVecchia in 1985; and his sister, Inge Locke. He is survived by his second wife, Florence Hoffman; one daughter, Karen LaVecchia and her husband, Joseph, of Fredon township; one son, Thomas Hoffmann and his wife, Sue, of Byram Township; three grandchildren, Tina Frumolt and her husband, Alan, Jenna Lombard and her husband, Nicholas, and Tara Bainer and her husband, Frank; two great-grandchildren, Joseph and Kayla Frumolt; three step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; and eight step-great-great-grandchildren. VFW services will be held at 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday at the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High Street, Newton. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 12 to 2 p.m. and 5 to 6:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
