Herbert Dyson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Henderson Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc. - Springfield on Oct. 30, 2024.
Retired U. S. Air Force Technical Sgt. Herbert M. Dyson, 95, of Springfield, MA departed this life for his heavenly home on Tuesday, October 22, 2024. He was born on July 8, 1929 to the late Edward and Mamie Dandridge Dyson in Petersburg, VA. He graduated from Peabody High School in Petersburg at the age of 17 and immediately entered military life in the Army before joining the Air Force where he faithfully served before retiring after 21 years of active duty. He was an experienced Personal Flight Equipment Outfitter stationed for many years at Westover Air Force Base. Throughout his military career, he also served in locations around the world including the UK, Japan, Newfoundland, Greenland, and Thailand. He received many awards and commendations for his excellent service. He loved the military and returned later to serve in the same life support area at Westover Air Force Base as a civil servant.
Sgt. Dyson began his adult life in the military, and it was only fitting that he would depart this life in the compassionate care of his beloved military at the VA long-term care facility in Leeds, Massachusetts.
Herbert was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lenneth, a daughter, Faye, and seven brothers and six sisters. He leaves to cherish his memory, his children, Veronica, Grace, and Gregory (Gina), three grandchildren, Jessica (Daniel), Miranda, Michaela, and two great-grandchildren. He also leaves a brother, Frank (Marlene) and a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors from all over the world who loved to connect with him for spirited conversation, laughter, and occasional dish of chocolate ice cream.
Herb was an avid gardener and deep-sea fisherman. He spent many hours diligently preparing for the gardening and fishing seasons to have just the right seeds and poles ready to go. In his later years, he made a true profession of his faith in Christ and found comfort in listening to the sermons of his favorite ministers, one of which was his son.

Herb was one of my first acquaintances at Westover in 1972. After I processed in to the flying squadron I was sent to Aircrew Life Support to get fitted for my equipment. I´m glad he had such a long and fulfilling life. Rest in Peace TSgt Dyson.

TSgt. Herb Dyson (active duty retired) worked in the same AF Reserve shop that I supervised as Superintendent for a while in the 1980s and early 1990s. That shop was the Air Force Reserve Aircrew Life Support (ALS) shop in Hangar 1 of the Westover ARB Base. Since Herb was a retired SAC active-duty ALS person, and he fit right in as a Civil Servant in that Air Force Reserve shop. Yes, I knew Herb loved to garden and fish. Fishing was one of the hobbies he did with many fellows from the ALS shop. Well, Herb has now taken his "final flight on the wings if an eagle". With that I give him a very heartfelt hand salute for his service to our country at so many different active-duty bases, and of course his service to Westover AFB/ARB, both active duty and assisting the Air Force Reserve at Westover ARB. Hand Salute!!!
