Herbert Claude Gilliam, affectionately known as Uncle Claude back home, went to be with the Lord on December 22, 2022 at Piedmont Augusta. He was 94.
Herb, the youngest of 13 children born to John and Charlottie Head Gilliam was born on December 13, 1928 in Scott County, Virginia. Soon after giving birth to him, his mother died leaving him to be raised by his father and siblings on a tobacco farm in the southwestern Virginia mountains. At age six, he learned the hard work and determination that it took to be a successful farmer. Many days were spent in the fields plowing a mule and tending to the farm animals that were required to scratch out a living. During the Korean Conflict, he joined the US Army and served two years. While in the military, his father died and when he was discharged from active duty he headed north to Gary, Indiana. Armed with a 7th grade education and a good work ethic, he began a career with US Steel as an industrial electrician. After retiring in 1988, he came to the Augusta area where he enjoyed playing cards and bingo at the Columbia County Senior Center. He was an avid gardener and lover of old western movies.
He is preceded in death by his mother, father, siblings, and great grandson Elias. He is survived by his two children; Jody (Kristin) Gilliam of Colbert and Jymi (John) Martin of Lincolnton. In addition, Herb leaves behind his three grandchildren; Karsen, Karleigh and Tristan.
The family will receive friends from 6pm until 8pm on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 at Beggs Funeral Home in Lincolnton. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at 2pm at Bellevue Memorial Gardens, Grovetown.
Beggs Funeral Home, Lincolnton is honored to serve the family of Mr. Herbert C. Gilliam.
