Herbert Yates Mason

Herbert Yates Mason, 81, died in the peace and quiet of his own Punta Gorda home on August 3, 2009. Born August 10, 1927 in Providence, RI, Herb was a lifelong resident of Cranston, RI and Yarmouth, MA before moving to Punta Gorda in 1988. After serving in the United State Coast Guard during the later stages of WWII and graduating with a B.S. in Business from Bryant College, Herb began his career in the real estate business, gradually moving from sales to development and appraisal. Over the years, his expertise and professional reputation led to his recognition as an expert in real estate valuations and he was frequently called upon to testify in both state and federal courts. After retiring, Herb settled in Punta Gorda and became an avid golfer at his home course, St. Andrews South in Punta Gorda. Always a man of the sea, Herb was also a past Commodore of the Bass River Yacht Club in South Yarmouth, MA. Herb enjoyed a rich and rewarding life, filled with frequent world travels with his beloved Joyce by his side, good meals, good drink, close friends and family who loved him. He will be sadly missed by his of wife of 58 years, Joyce (Rushton) Mason; sons, Donald (Jane) Mason and James (Linda) Mason; daughter, Debra (Mark) Ophoven; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren, all of whom affectionately refer to him as “Bubba;” and many close and dear friends. A private graveside service will be held in Rhode Island this fall. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a memorial donation be made in his honor to the Moffitt Cancer Center Foundation, 12902 Magnolia Drive, Tampa, FL 33612.
