Herbert James Meyer Jr., 70 years of age and resident of West Dundee, Illinois, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.
He was born on January 26, 1956, in Davenport, Iowa, to the late Herbert James Meyer Sr. and JoAnne Louise McDonnell. On October 8, 1983, Herb married Dawn Lynn Stevens in Mount Prospect, Illinois. They spent over 52 wonderful years together.
Herb is survived by his loving wife, Dawn L. Meyer; children Michael Meyer, Steven (Melissa) Meyer, and Katherine (Alex Reese) Meyer; grandchildren Sadie, Madelyn, Connor, and Kendall Meyer; siblings Jeff (Sharon) Meyer, Julie (John) Jirschele, Tim Meyer, and Michael (Janet) Meyer; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert James Meyer Sr. and JoAnne Louise (nee McDonnell) Meyer.
Herb recently retired after a long and dedicated career in the car business. Known for his strong work ethic and generous spirit, he was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Herb treated everyone he met with warmth and respect and truly never met a stranger. Curious and knowledgeable, Herb knew a little bit about everything, loved chatting and sharing advice, and was the best trivia partner you could ask for. A man of strong faith with a huge heart, he made everyone feel welcome and loved. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, watching movies—especially Marvel films—and had a great sense of humor, always ready with a joke to brighten the moment. Above all, Herb loved his family deeply and never missed a chance to remind them. He will be remembered as a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, whose big heart, humor, and generosity left an unforgettable mark on everyone who knew him.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 12, from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m., at St. Anne Catholic Church, 120 Ela Street, Barrington, IL 60010. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Anne Catholic Church the following day, Friday, March 13, at 10:30 a.m. Herb will be laid to rest thereafter at St. Michael Cemetery, 1185 Algonquin Road, Palatine, IL 60067.
