Central Square - Herbert M. Pelton, 95, of Central Square, NY passed away peacefully in Oswego, NY on April 16, 2020. Herbert is predeceased by his parents; Homer L. Pelton, and Julia (Morley) Pelton; his daughter, Mary Simons; his sisters, Julia Bernstein, Laura Gambacurta, and Ella Tribbett; and brothers, Homer Pelton, and Leon "Monroe' Pelton. Herb was born in Penn Yan, NY on October 1, 1924. He lived in Penn Yan, Greenlawn, Bayside, Whitestone, Pleasant Valley, Liverpool and Central Square.

He married Doris (Evers) Pelton (d. 2013) and together for 40 years they raised 12 children: Julia Purdy, Herbert Pelton Jr, James Pelton, Charles (Sandy) Pelton, Thomas (Cherrie) Pelton, Mary (Bob) Simons, Ella Gufler, Laura Wetzel, Teresa (Steve) Hughes; Dennis Pelton, Robert (Debby) Pelton, and Daniel Pelton. They share 27 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, and 19 great-great grandchildren. He has many nephews and nieces; great nephews and nieces; and great-great nephews and nieces..

Herb served during WWII in the US Navy from 1942 to 1948, as a Sonar Man First Class in the Pacific. He then worked as a civilian at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. After retiring from his career with the FAA (Tower Chief at LaGuardia Airport, electronic technician supervisor in Syracuse) he kept active with other pursuits: owner/operator Herb's Sunoco; owner Golf Clubs Et Al, custom golf club manufacturer; tour bus and school bus driver in Syracuse, Oswego, and Liverpool; and real estate.

Herb was an active member for 72 years with the American Legion, and the commander of the American Legion Posts in Whitestone (where he was the keynote speaker at several Memorial Day observances), Pleasant Valley, and Central Square. In 2016, accompanied by daughter Teresa Hughes (Air Force), he proudly participated in an Honor Flight to Washington, DC.

Herb enjoyed camping, softball, golf, and bowling. He was an avid sports fan of the New York Yankees and Syracuse Orange teams. He was a very "hands-on" Dad and involved in many children's organizations (coached and umpired little league baseball, Scouts, Civil Air Patrol). He was an active member of the Pleasant Valley Volunteer Fire Department (fire police).

Herbert is survived by his wife Mary "Kilpatrick" Pelton, they were happily married on Feb 20, 1988, for 32 years. . Herbert and Mary were members of the Divine Mercy Parish in Central Square.
