Herbert Edward Spivey, PhD – Candler, NC - Ed Spivey, 71, passed away on May 22, 2009, in Asheville, NC. Ed was born in Sanford and raised in Mt. Gilead, NC. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Johnsie (Cameron) Spivey. Ed completed his undergraduate education at Davidson College and his graduate studies at Duke University. During that time Ed taught at NC Central University. While serving as a Captain in the Army from 1966-68, Ed taught at the U.S. Army Insti-tute of Administration. Ed moved to Colorado in 1968 to teach Literature at Colorado College. Subsequently he received his MA in Counseling from UCCS, and worked for the City of Colorado Springs Police Dept. as a Youth Ser-vices counselor and later as Supervisor in Research and Development while continuing to teach part-time. After retiring in 2003 he returned to NC and continued to work as a consultant. Ed never lost his passion for literature, music, education, art, politics, humor and serving the needs of others. He is survived by his wife, LaVonne "Bonnie" Spivey of Candler, NC, his children, Siobhan (Paul) Brown of Seattle, WA, Theresa Vineyard of St. Petersburg, FL, and Greg Vineyard of Candler, NC, and his brother, Al (Melanie) Spivey of St. Simon's Island, GA. A memorial service will be held at Calvary Episcopal Church in Fletcher, NC on Friday, June 12, 2009, 11:00 am, Victor Mansfield, Rector, officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Calvary Church Memorial Education Fund or to the Rector's Discretionary Fund.
