Herbert Wilson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home - Columbia on Dec. 17, 2025.
Herbert Wilson was born January 16, 1955, in Mayesville, South Carolina, the beloved son of the late Harmon and Rachel Cato Wilson. On Sunday, December 14, 2025, the Lord called him to eternal rest.

At a young age, Herbert answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army and proudly served during the Vietnam Era. His early education began at Mayesville Institute in Mayesville, SC, continued at Mayewood High School in Sumter, SC, and later at C.A. Johnson High School in Columbia, SC, where he graduated. In 2006, he furthered his education and completed a professional plumbing program from Ashworth Career School. Throughout his life, he was known for his strong work ethic and dedication. Herbert was formerly employed with Richland County School District Five and later pursued a successful career in truck driving, retiring in 2017 from Quikrete in Atlanta, GA, after many years of service on the road. He was also a proud and active member of the Modern Free and Accepted Masons of Ancient Square Lodge No. 223 of the State of South Carolina, where he cherished the brotherhood and upheld the values of service, integrity, and community.

He was a devoted member of Zion Baptist Church in Columbia, SC and accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, McKinley Wilson, Harmon Wilson Jr., Jim Wilson; four sisters, Emma Wilson, Lucille Garcia, Luvina Shaw, and Mary Louise Wilson Lowery; one uncle, Ben Cato; three aunts, Annie C. Davis, Marie C. Benjamin, and Emma Cato.

He leaves to cherish his memories five children, Sonya Conyers of San Antonio, TX, Shaneika Steele of Sumter, SC, Demetreas (Heather) Wilson of Blythewood, SC, Latisha (Leonard) Fields of Harker Heights, TX, and Brenda Thorpe of Irmo, SC; one brother, James Wilson of Mayesville, SC; three sisters, Evelyn (Melvin) Plowden, Deborah (Robert) Wheeler both of Mayesville, SC, and Janie Singleton of Sumter, SC; 16 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other bereaved relatives and friends, all of whom will dearly miss him.
