Hilda Elizabeth West, 108, of Quincy, passed away Sunday, March 1, 2026, at Good Samaritan Home in Quincy, IL.
Born March 30,1917 at the family home in Melrose Township - daughter of John William and Amelia K Spechart Loos. She married T. Bruce West on November 21, 1931, in the Congregational Church at University City, Missouri. The love of her life passed away just shy of their 50th wedding anniversary - June 6, 1991. Hilda worked as a bookkeeper for a number of years - last place of employment at Gates Radio. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
The West family lived in Quincy until 1962 when they moved to Denver, Colorado for more employment opportunities. In 1965, they continued west to West Covina, CA where they lived until her husband passed away in 1991. In 1992, Hilda moved back to Quincy to cheer on her beloved Cardinals, but spent the winter in California with her family until 2019. At 101, she gave up her independence of flying to California and driving - moving into assisted living at Good Sam. Hilda continued to maintain her spiritual and positive attitude through it all.
While living in California, she was an active member of the West Covina Methodist Church, having served on numerous committees. Hilda was an avid walker and loved playing cards and being with family and friends. She and her husband loved to travel including several overseas trips as well as traveling throughout most the U.S.
Hilda was a member of Salem Church, Salem Guild, Quilters group, Good Samaritan Auxiliary and Faith Christian Jolly Seniors.
Hilda is preceded in death by her loving husband, Bruce and son Tom in 2018, as well as 5 brothers and 6 sisters. She is survived by her daughter, Karen (Dave) Capestro of Yorba Linda, CA; Four grandchildren: Kacey (Dennis) Bent of Trabuco Canyon, CA; Wendy (Ruben) Rivas of Orange, CA; Joshua West of Boulder, CO; Lauren (Kevin) Cruz of Los Angeles, CA; as well as 3 great grandsons and 3 great granddaughters.
A Funeral Ceremony will be at 1:00 pm Thursday, March 5, 2026, at O'Donnell-Cookson Life Celebration Home in Quincy. Chaplain Josh Vahle will officiate. Burial will follow at Quincy Memorial Park in Quincy, IL.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Good Samaritan Home for the Hilda West Nursing Scholarship.
